Sick’s True Definition In most people’s eyes, the word sick is the meaning of an individual’s health being subpar. My definition of sick is true definition and much more. I have several different meanings of the word. Sick can be used in almost every sentence and can describe almost any idea. My personal favorite meaning of sick is a synonym to the word awesome. An example of the definition is if someone won fifty million dollars in the lottery. A person might reply with “That’s sick” to show how exciting winning the lottery is. Sick can be used in several different forms such as synonyms for awesome, ugly, nasty, or its dictionary definition meaning not feeling well. I was taught these meanings the more I grew up. The older I became, the “slangier” the word sick became. It all started when I was in the sixth grade. I went through my skateboarding stage that many teenage boys go through. As I became more into skateboarding I started learning the skater’s lingo. The word sick was one of their favorite words. They used it all the time. I never could really comprehend what most of the words they used meant, but one of the first ones I did learn was the word sick. I started using it more and more. It stayed with me forever and now I practice …show more content…
it in everyday language. It is quite comical using the word sick in conversations with people who may not understand the meanings.
When talking to someone like my grandparents, I may slip up and say an exciting play in a football game is sick. They do not understand what I mean by the word because they are used to the word meaning not feeling well. There is humor in the differences in the meanings of the word as well. I have had experiences with my father in the car where we both see a truck. I have said that the particular truck is sick and he will be confused as to whether I mean tremendous or unpleasant. The word can be confusing because it can mean two totally different
ideas. When I am with my friends, the word sick is exclaimed in almost every conversation. An outsider may try listening to my friends and me talk in everyday conversation and have no clue what we are talking about due to the fact we use the term sick so much. Sick can be expressed in our feeling about a particular subject we may be talking about. It may also describe a certain object we are explaining to each other. In any case, an older individual may not comprehend the true meaning of what my friends and I discuss. Sick is a word that I, and many of my friends, use every day. The term sick can be expressed as a wide range of adjectives. I will never forget the skateboarders I met who helped me learn a new slang word that I use every day. It may not be the most formal or most intelligent sounding word, but in my eyes it is a “sick” word to add to and utilize daily in my vocabulary.
