Summary
Dr. R. E. Hawkins model for guiding the counseling process is based on five concentric circles which represent the factors of an individual’s personality and physiology. These circles are the core self, the soul, the body temporal and supernatural systems. Hawkins utilizes four phases in which counselor and client work through in order to overcome the issues plaguing the client. Inside the core circle is the innermost self, the image of God. According to Hawkins, in order to be balanced and have any long-lasting success in counseling, one’s significance, safety and security must have in its core, the Holy Spirit. With this belief at heart, one can move on to the second circle – the soul where there is thinking, volition, conscience, feeling and emotion. The next circle, is the physical body of the individual. The fourth circle, the temporal systems circle include factors that affect the individual’s life – family, friends, church, society, education, government and economy. Phase one involves gaining an understanding of the problem by having the client discuss the issue and the counselor listening. Phase two involves the counselor proposing, pre-testing, and tracking what the client says through reality testing to see if what is said holds true. Next phase, a plan of action is then formulated with the client taking ownership of its implementation and outcome.
