Celine is extremely jealous of her, so when she hears that Harpo needs help “controlling” Sophia, she supports the suggestion of beating her. When Harpo attempts to pursue his plan, Sophia quickly turns the tables and ends up beating Harpo, but not without him telling her it was because of Celie. Sophia is shocked that Celie would tell Harpo to do such a thing, but finds out it was because of pure jealousy. Celie wishes that she could be so independent and confident to stand up for herself like Sophia, who ends up feeling bad for Celie. This really brings into perspective for us, the readers, the affect of the tragic abuse Celie endured for years and years has on her.
