How To Write An Essay On The Book Thief
POW! Right smack in my forehead leaving a dent and a gash right in my skull. The metal baseball bat swooped around and made hard contact with my skull. It was a warm sunny day in the middle of the summer. Joey, my brother, was hitting tennis balls over my house. Little 10 year old I was playing in the yard. My brother (who had more brains than I have had) purposely pushed me far away so he wouldn’t hit me while he was swinging. Oh how I was a stupid little kid. I was so intrigued by that darn bat and ball going over the house I just had to get a closer look. I started wandering over to him, like how not knowing little kids do. As I approached my brother, he was so convene on himself that he did not see me. When I finally reached him, he had …show more content…
I remember this room being very cold. Next thing, I was dreaming. I had been knocked out with gas and was getting operated on. I had lost a lot of blood. I woke up, family surrounding me. The doctor comes in and explains to me the 20 stitches placed in my head. I will forever know this moment that has happened in my life. From The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, this incident ties into the chapter “The Book of Fire” on page 114. This chapter is about how Liesel is waiting for Hans and his pal to finish a conversation when she notices Nazi’s burning Jewish items. This Passage reminds me of the similar situation that has happened to Liesel when her younger brother, Werner, died suddenly during their trip to Germany. Similarly, Arthur Berg is also going through this situation, but with his sister dying in his arms. Also, when death, the narrator says that he "could sense [that] he would hold her for hours," it reminds me of Liesel shaking his brother as she doesn’t believe that he is dead. (Zusak 167) As well, these passage allows the reader to understand that death can arrive at anytime, leaving their loved ones in sorrow, which is also one of theme that is revealed through this piece of…

Although most assume Death looks like the Grim Reaper or a scary skeleton thing, in The Book Thief, Death is not. In fact, he even tells us what he looks like when he says, “I do not carry a sickle or a scythe. I only wear a hooded black robe when it’s cold. And I don’t have those skull-like facial features you seem to enjoy pinning on me from a distance… Find yourself a mirror while I continue” (Zusak 307). Essentially Death is saying that because all humans die, we all resemble death. Humans can and will die, and thus he is one of the things that is constant between all humans. Due to this reason I drew a man looking into a mirror to show Death. I just…

No one believed she was smart enough to read, and instead of being placed in her age appropriate classes, she was out with the kids at her reading level. For her it was humiliating, but it only gave her the fuel she needed to keep moving forward. Desperate for help, she confronted her uneducated step father Hans for help. Hans himself cannot read that well, but she knows any help is better than none. Hans, referred to as Papa by Liesel, began to teach Liesel basic reading skills every night. They had a tradition, “unofficially…called the midnight class, even though it commenced around two in the morning”. Now Liesel knew how to read. She had an unlimited amount of knowledge available to her through literature. But, she herself could not take down Hitler. That does not mean that she could not fight back though. When the Nazi’s bombed her street, most people stood in the bomb shelter terrified. Yet, Liesel instead took out a book and began to read. Everyone soon began to congregate around her and listen. The fear of what was going on around them subsided, and at the moment they had won. Though Hitler was still attack them, he no longer had control over them, they were not scared. Liesel has a great passion for books and it is first shown when her brother dies and she steals her first book The Gravedigger’s Handbook. The second time Liesel steals a book, she is seen by Ilsa who is one of the clients of Liesel's mother Rosa Hubermann. Liesel faces an argument with Ilsa and this is how she used the power of words: “It’s about time,” she informed her, “that you do your own stinking washing anyway. It’s about time you faced the fact that your son is dead. He got killed! He got strangled and cut up more than twenty years ago! Or did he freeze to death? Either way, he’s dead! He’s dead…

The act of theft is predominantly considered worldwide to be one of the most corrupt acts one can commit, it is even written in the Bible as the eighth commandment that one “shall not steal”. So it is particularly interesting when the act of theft is not used in a narrative not to show how iniquitous the villain is but rather to make a point about the protagonist of the story. Such is the case for Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief. In the book thief Zusak uses the motif of thievery to as an act of empowerment for Liesel. It is representative of how Lisel is trying to take control back of her life in a time where she feels she has lost all control of the world around her. The act of stealing books is also significant as this can represent her taking knowledge back from her oppressors who wish to destroy it. The act of stealing is never in the novel portrayed as a crime of any sort, rather the act of theft flourishes into an act of liberation for Liesel.…

When she originally came to her foster family, she only recognized very simple words: “He made [Liesel] point out any words she could read and ... say … , there were only three--the three main German words for ‘the.’ The whole page must have two hundred German words on it,” (67). She was completely committed to learning how to read. Every night Liesel would wake up because of nightmares. Her foster father would read with her and help her learn to read and write each night at around two o’clock in the morning. Liesel also really loved books. Her foster family was very poor, so they couldn’t afford to get Liesel presents for her birthday or Christmas. On Hitler’s birthday, the town decided to do a book burning. A few books survived the fire, so “she snatched [a] book from beneath a steaming heap of ashes” (84). Liesel was willing to risk going to jail (or worse) to read a book. More people should be like Liesel when it comes to her bravery and her willingness to work hard for the things she…

Well, as fate would have it, Nick ran into me. The momentum he had on impact, caused me to fall forward, right into a brick wall. I remember the pain running through my arms and face, but nothing hurt as badly as my lip. My first grade teacher came out, and she helped me to the nurse. The nurse called my mother, and told her that I had to go to the hospital. Before my mother got to the school, although she was driving pretty fast, I got to look in the mirror. My upper lip was split open, and did not look pretty. It was bleeding excessively when my mother got to the school. She quickly got me into the car, and we drove off.…
