sound. People would stop talking and the orchestra would stop playing. At midnight a masked figure appears, people began to whisper because he wore clothing of the grave, and his mask resembled the face of a corpse.
He was also covered in blood, so we know that this represents either the “Red Death” or a victim of the “Red Death”. It got through the fates of the castle that the prince had set up to fight it. No one was brave enough to seize the intruder, and it made its way through the rooms and as soon as the prince reached him, the prince died. Then some of party guests threw themselves onto this figure, and found that no one was under the costume. “The whole company, indeed, seemed now deeply that to feel that in the costume and bearing of the stranger neither wit nor propriety existed” Eventually, one by one all of the guests died, the flames of the tripods went out, and the ebony clock stopped. “And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over
all.” The main message that I found in this story, is that death is inevitable. You can’t avoid it, it will always get to you. The figure represented the presence of the “Red Death”, the story said it entered like “a thief in the night.” No matter how much the Prince did to avoid it or how rich he was, the “Red Death” did in fact end up killing him. He had a large deal of wealth which he tries to use to fight off death, but none of it worked.
Also the fact that he was so selfish he could have helped other people but just worried about himself and tried to save himself. In the end the “Red Death” got him. He had the wealth and the ability to help out the other people in the town, but secluded his castle and didn’t think about how the others would be affected.
