How to Write a Compare and Contast Essay for Ap Wprld History
First In Class Essay

Question: Compare and contrast Egypt and Mesopotamia. Consider social, political, economic, intellectual, technological and cultural similarities and differences. Come prepared on the second day your class meets with your completed rubric worksheet (attached) and be ready to write a four-paragraph essay, which includes:

Introduction: Thesis statements: Three or four sentences that answer the question. Your thesis statement MUST have BOTH similarities and differences. Please do not write “in this essay, I am going to talk about.” Don’t tell me what you are going to tell me. Just tell me.

Two supporting paragraphs: One paragraph should include similarities, and the reasons for similarities and the other differences and the reasons for differences.

Conclusion: Restate your thesis. Summarize your main points.

Preparing to write your first in class essay:
1. Read question and relevant information in your textbook carefully. If this is not enough information, I encourage you to seek additional sources (books, encyclopedias, Internet etc.

2. Take notes on the information. Create a list of at least ten things that you want to include in your essay.

3. Divide your list into similarities and differences.

4. Answer the question. Your answer should be one or two sentences in length. This is your thesis statement.

5. Reword your thesis statement. Check to make sure it sounds clear (Does it make sense?).

6. Check your thesis again. (This is by far the most important part of your essay) Does it answer the question? Does it mention both societies and have both similarities and differences?

7. Your thesis statement and essay should include similarities and differences as well as at least two direct comparisons. (direct comparisons mention both subjects in the same sentence. For example: Liberty has been around for a hundred years, but Heritage is only five years old.) Include and explanation of why things were different

The comparative essay focuses on developments across at least two regions or societies. It relates to one of the five major themes in the course, such as state building, interactions between or among cultures, or economic systems. Comparative questions always require an analysis of the reasons for the identified similarities and differences. As in the previous continuity and change over time essay, students may have the opportunity to choose different cases for comparisons from among several options. And, also as in both of the previous essays, a variety of the historical thinking skills (such as argumentation, causation, and synthesis) are evaluated along with comparison. The generic scoring guide for the comparative essay is below; following that, on the next two pages, are a sample comparative essay question, the directions that appear in the AP Exam booklet, and a discussion of “What Good Responses Should Include.”…

For the first part of this assignment you will create a thesis statement. A thesis statement is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph that presents your main idea to the reader. The body of the essay organizes the material you gather and present in support of your main idea. Keep in mind that a thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. (Note: Students please consult Stanford University’s Website with tips on how to construct a proper thesis, the webpage can be found at:http://www.stanford.edu/~steener/handouts/thesis.htm…
