The two main life lessons that I took away from this play were lessons of perseverance and teamwork. Although the characters faced many obstacles and had doubts along the way, in the end they never gave up because of their high hopes and ambitions. They had a dream and chased it, regardless of the factors holding them back, such as their parents’ expectations, the type of community they live in, and even themselves. But in order to persevere, it took cooperation between the group to come together and compromise to create a rap they could be proud of. At the end, the characters settled their differences and overcame their fears.
The aesthetics of How We Got On ties the entire play all together. The neon colors and designs on the floor were vibrant, eye-catching, and appropriate for the setting. The costumes were appropriate for the setting as well. However, I feel like the use of more props, such as an actual mixtape or basketball would enhance the play a little more, but the absence of those props didn’t take away from the play.
