In the beginning the author says the brain is a muscle, intelligence is more complex than labeling someone as smart or dumb. It is emphasized that though exercise, the brain will get stronger, just as someone who consistently works out might. Growing up I had very poor people skills, I was always brash and overly aggressive, though my intent was never to be so. I refused to change, this is when the “don’t change yourself” phenomenon was going on, I stubbornly insisted that I was perfect the way I was and it was everyone else that was in the wrong for not liking me. I became very unhappy, angry at the way my peers avoided me, yet I refused to change. It wasn’t till one of my teachers, a woman whom I looked up to, told me that the other students were distressed about my behavior. Very gently she explained that my bold behavior simply kept people at a distance.
