Ultimately I want my project to be a success. I want to run the project the client wants and drive to the business solution the client needs. In order to do that well, I think it's very important to understand the needs behind the requirements as much as possible before starting the project and continually while the project is being executed. The needs behind the requirements tell a lot of the story. I have found by asking a lot of questions it is possible to find out a better way to meet the needs behind the requirement. This is non-negotiable. If I am uncomfortable going directly to the manager I can go to HR or work with the ombudsman. I cannot pretend to un-see or un-hear what I have seen or heard.
How will your actions in this situation affect your ability to conduct needs assessment for future projects?
If I am ethical in my behavior I will be trusted in future projects. I may have a warped view here because I work for a company where ethics are intertwined in everything we do. There is no question that reporting unethical behavior is the right thing to do. Turning a blind eye is one of the few actions that will get you fired. If I am working for a company where this is not true. One in which I will not be invited to manage future projects because I have highlighted an ethical issue then it's time for me to find a new job.
