Project Management 586
1. What type of organizational structure do you see this project operating under and why? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this operating structure compare to the other structures?
The Huntsville Project’s operating structure is a Matrix Project Type because the team consists of individuals representing several departments within the Seitz Corporation. Upon completion of the project, the team members will return to their daily duties within the company.
There are several advantages when operating under a matrix structure. For example, the project manager can analyze the technical expertise each of his team members brings to the project and assign the members to the …show more content…
task that have to be completed. The project manager may also be able to share resources between the team members. Communication and collaboration will be channeled up and the teams and organization aiding in the successful completion of the respective project. Another advantage is the potential each team member has to learn a new set of skills and insight that could benefit them in the future.
The biggest disadvantage is the difficulty this type of structure is to manage. In the Matrix, the team members are reporting at times to more than one manager at the same time. When they are reporting to both the functional manager and the project manager at one time, there is potential for confusion for everyone. The confusion may cause conflict regarding the work, schedules and priorities.
2.
Describe what you have learned as you went through this project. What will you take away from this course, and what will you apply to your projects or personal life?
This project had taught me the basic skills to manage any future projects project from start to finish. The Huntsville Project has given me fundamental skills to plan my objectives, organize my tasks, and help me manage all aspects of my project. It has also helped me to understand the importance of considering my resources and budget constraints to ensure completion is done efficiently.
The skills in this course gave me the confidence to carry out this project:
I have participated as a co-chair for this year’s Holiday office Luncheon. Just before Thanksgiving, a co-worker and I were just mentioning how we cannot believe this year is almost over. Christmas and the office holiday party came up in conversation. Candy and I said we would organize it this year (this is where became came Program Managers on the Holiday Office Party Project). At lunch that after we began brainstorming ideas to make the holiday a little more fun in the days leading up to the office party. We decided on about four activities that would be fun and most would want to participate
in.
- Raffle for a Christmas Basket
- Ugly Sweater Contest
- Secret Santa
- White Elephant gift exchange
- Luncheon
- Door Prizes
The next morning I sent email-requesting volunteers to take charge of the various activities. The following afternoon we all meant and activities were assigned, date of party was set and a venue was booked. Each lead fulfilled their part and the days leading up to the party and the party, itself was a success.
A lesson learned from the Holiday office project was to ask about special diets, such as who does not eat pork or beef and how who is a vegetarian.
