Edwin Hubble was born on November 20, 1889. His father was John Powell Hubble and his was mother Virginia Lee Hubble. In 1898, his family moved to Chicago, Illinois. Hubble went to school there until …show more content…
It was launched on April 24, 1990. It sits 340 miles above earth. It goes 5 miles a second. It weighs as much as two adult elephants. The technology on the Hubble Space Telescope is amazing. The cameras on The Hubble Telescope can see many types of light including infrared and ultraviolet light. HubbleSite.org states that the telescope uses a Cassegrain reflector telescope. A Cassegrain reflector has two mirrors. Light hits the main mirror and bounces to the second mirror. The second mirror is located in the hole in the center of the main mirror. From there the light goes to the science instruments. Hubble’s main mirror is a total of 189 inches wide. The Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) has the best resolution of all the tech aboard Hubble. This is what allows Hubble to see infrared and ultraviolet light. The WFC3 is used to study dark matter and dark energy. It is one of two new pieces on Hubble. The other new piece is the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). This is the main camera to see ultraviolet light. It can tell us an object’s temperature, chemical composition, density, and motion. The Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) is used to see visible light. It can see very far into the universe. The ACS has found large planets, galaxies, and other celestial objects. Another camera that can see ultraviolet is the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). It is known for its ability to find black holes. The COS …show more content…
Space.com devotes a page just for them. Up first was the discovery was dark matter. Dark matter is all the objects in space that astronomers cannot see. Hubble helped solve this problem. It uses the WFC3 to see dark matter. The space telescope has also discovered Pluto’s moons, Nix and Hydra. Another discovery was Eris, a dwarf planet. With this discovery, scientists realized that there might be more planets like Eris out in the Kuiper Belt. Hubble Space Telescope has taken many pictures of gamma ray bursts. Gamma ray bursts are giant explosions in space. This explosion sends out more energy than what our sun will make in 10 billion years. The Hubble Telescope has caught Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 hit Jupiter. The telescope saw all twenty-one pieces of the somet hit Jupiter. As a result, there was an explosion equal to 6,000 gigatons of TNT. One gigaton is equal to one billion tons of TNT. Massive black holes were also found by the Hubble Telescope. Massive black holes were believed to be in every galaxy. Many exoplanets were found by the telescope too. By 2011, over 400 exoplanets were discovered.
The implications of the Hubble telescope are few. NASA might be able to travel to a black hole and observe it from close up. Scientists could make more telescopes just like Hubble. Even more pictures could to taken. The Hubble Telescope will make our future in astronomy better.
The Hubble Space Telescope is a magnificent piece
