27 years, they did everything they could so he would not have the courage to continue fighting and thinking they were breaking his spirit but they were giving him more and more courage and preparing him to fight even more. He had not only courage but also guts to stand for his country.
Peace of mind was also another meaningful trait.
A lot of people are scared of what might happen next if they do something or what are the circumstances for their acts just like Huck and Jim from Huck Finn. They were always worried that they might find them and what they will do to them when they find them. Example: When they were in the city, they couldn’t be who they are. Jim had to act as if he was Hucks slave. They only be themselves when they know they are somewhere safe. Also, Huck had to pretend to be someone else “ Oh, yes’m, i did. Sarah Mary Williams. Sarah’s my first name. Some calls me Sarah, some calls me Mary” (Huck 30). It’s funny to see how he was caught up in a lie and this is not the first time he lies. Also it clearly shows how scared he is to be caught. However on the other hand, In Long Walk to Freedom, Mandela was never worried about what comes next or what they will do to him. He was always ready for what was coming. Example, when Mandela taken to the Rivonia prison before he was transferred to Robben Island, one of the guards was making Mandela and his friend Tefu walk after and saying that he will hit them if they don’t. Firmly Mandela said “ If you so much as lay a hand on me, I will take you to the highest court in the land and when i finish I with you, you will be as poor as a church mouse” (Mandela 342). Certainly, this shows that Mandela was not worried not a bit about what would have happened to him and he is saying that if the guard hits him,
he will take him to court and he will no longer have anything. Basically his life will be useless by then.
The last trait that was presented, was patience which is the most important of all. Patience is not something that everybody are capable of. Some people like things that come right away. How every that’s not how things in life goes, it takes a little patience to finally get to the goal. Example, in Huck Finn Huck and Jim waited patiently for a perfect day where they will have to escape. After they escaped, they had to travel only at night from one place to another so no one would find them and waiting until they get somewhere safe. Another perfect example taken from Long Walk to Freedom; before Mandela was released, he went through a lot of danger. He traveled here and there trying to find somewhere safe for his family and for himself but there was no where safe and most of the time he ended up in prison. He waited patiently 27 years in prison for the day of freedom to come because he had hope.
