Response to: “An Indian Father’s Plea” When one does not have a lot of confidence when it comes to a certain task, the person does not feel as if they could continue to improve nor do they feel that they have a chance of ever improving. The letter, “An Indian Father’s Plea”, written by Medicine Grizzlybear Lake is a letter that the father of Wind-Wolf wrote to Wind-Wolf’s teacher. The author wrote this letter informing the teacher of the unfairness that his son was experience in school, not only from the students but mainly from the teacher. Grizzleybear wrote that, “It takes a long time to absorb and reflect on these kinds of experiences, so maybe that is why you think my Indian child is a slow learner”. This means that only because Wind-Wolf was brought up differently compared to the rest of his classmates and that he learned differently than his class mates, does not make him a “slow-learner”. The letter that Grizzlybear wrote, reminds me the difficulties that I have when it comes to memorizing. Although I am talented when it comes to music, it is only because I tend to practice many hours a day. In contrast though, I am weak when it comes to memorizing because, I do not practice nor do I find the motivation in my classes. I must use my strength when it comes to practicing a lot and put it into memorizing. One of my greatest strength is my musical talent. My love for music has helped me greatly in the past; one of the instances was my solo for an opening of a concert. The rush of overwhelming joy from all the hard work and hours that I had put into practicing my solo had finally paid off. The rough and scratchy sounds of my solo, mixing with the rest of the band sounded like heaven. This solo re-ignited my love for playing guitar and really pushed me to continue what I loved to do most. My dedication of further improving my musical skill is why I am able to advise other to play guitar.

I have many strengths as well as areas to grow in, some of them overlap as both a strength and an area of growth. One of my strengths is trying hard to get any job put in front of me done no matter what it may be. Another is the inability to say no to anything someone asks me to do such as pick up a shift at work or can you help them at home. This one is as much an area of growth as it is a strength. Some areas of growth that I am focusing on improving include being more patient and not speaking too much.…

Using experience as knowledge, the narrator decides that even accomplishing his dream: becoming a great African American composer, is still not enough to ease the life of an African American man. The identity, if accepted, is difficult and unnecessary for a man of his stature. Despite the great progress made by the race combined with the great history that African Americans claim, the narrator remains discouraged by the difficulty to gain social recognition, the lack of respect received by fellow countrymen, and the ability to live a life of comfort as a colored…

I feel I have many different strengths. One of which I think stands out the most is that I’m willing to take criticism. When I get scowled by someone, I don’t take it as something negative right away. Instead I will sit down and reflect on the situation before coming to a conclusion. Many people will think the person yelling at them is terrible but I think it’s the opposite. This is because the person actually cares enough about you to point out your weaknesses so that you know and be able to fix them. A weakness of mine…

"I refused to fail. I was smart. I was arrogant. I was lucky." These were the words Alexie used in his story. Indian children were stereotypically supposed to fail in the classroom, and most did. Alexie was smart though and the Indians who weren't, ridiculed him. Those who failed were accepted, those who excelled weren't. But Alexie loved to read. He read everything he possibly could, even if they weren't books.…

He understands why the kids in the tribe resist the educational system. They mistakenly think that they can gain power by subverting the system. From a young age, he consciously decided to break away and lead by example regardless of the social repercussions. He admits that he was arrogant and smart, but he survives as a lone wolf, in part, to the strength of those attributes. He absorbs the ridicule that his classmates hurl at him, but he does not deviate from the path. He devours all the reading material he finds. He says, “I read anything that had words and paragraphs. I read with equal parts joy and desperation. I loved those books, but I also knew that love had only one purpose. I was trying to save my life”…

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve observed people playing music around me. My family is musically inclined, which I believe is the reason I’ve been drawn to it. In 2006, I began taking guitar lessons but I never had much interest in playing. Things changed in 2009, and I wished to be different. I wanted to be good at something so I began to teach myself guitar and have stuck with the guitar until now. In 2010, I began to play on my church’s worship team and I enjoyed it very much. I have now been a worship leader for the past four years and it’s something I love to do. I love it so much that for the past two years I have gone to Camp Electric to improve my skills. Camp Electric is a rock and roll music camp where musicians pick an instrument and they participate in workshops with that instrument. This camp is filled with people who love music and who love playing music. I have such a passion for playing that I have begun teaching guitar lessons and now I am expressing music with my patients in order to achieve a goal.…

After completing the StregthsQuest survey, I learned that my five greatest strengths are Harmony, Competition, Achiever, Includer, and Communication. Some of these strengths I had previously recognized as a strength, but a few were a surprise to me. Growing up, I was always a competitive person. I enjoyed the thrill of winning, whether it be in a team effort or individual effort. Also, I have always wanted to achieve great things in both my personal and professional life. I believe that I have always been great at communicating with others and love to include others in everything that I do to achieve a goal. I would say a strength of mine is assessment; I feel comfortable with each component and am continuing to get better with every clinic and patient experience. I can probe a patient with 100% accuracy and am confident in what I am doing, which led me to receiving 100% on my skill evaluation for probe technique. I was also able to complete dental charting on all my patients correctly and without help. Last term I had a difficult time distinguishing between a composite and an older sealant; however, this term I have figured out how to distinguish the two. Another area I feel is a strong point for me is professionalism. Despite the fact that I…

I feel that my greatest skill is perseverance. When I was 9, I left brick and mortar education to pursue one of my greatest passions: figure skating. It was my dream to go the 2018 Winter Olympic Games representing the United States of America. Many years later, fractures in both of my knees ended that dream. I thought that I'd be able to return, and would have a fantastic comeback story, but the knee pain never left. I was never able to return to the sport.…
