Chosen Artists: Ben Frost and Pricilla Bracks.
A human environment, as defined by a glossary website is a ‘Natural and physical environment and the relationship of people with that environment including physical, biological, cultural, social, and economic factors in a given area.’ (http://www.cawater-info.net/bk/glossary/water_management/en/h.htm) Through the human environment that artists are in and depending on what events are occurring during present society, art will be manipulated and determined in many ways to present the environment that is surrounding a person. whether it be, as the glossary defines, physical, biological cultural or social. Artists are the same when their work is being manufactured and created. “Contemporary artists continue to explore the scope in diverse and personal ways”. Ben Frost is an Australian Kaleidoscope Pop Artist who is best known for his mash up paintings that are inspired by Graffiti around diverse areas of where he lives. Priscilla Bracks is also an Australian artist, and her work is based on her theory of the world, what her thoughts inhabit. Using photography illustration and installation to create work about human kind and how our future will arise from our ideas and thoughts of popular culture. Both environments of these two artists has sculptured and structured their art. Evaluating either of the environments to determine the type of physical element that was produced in the work is then to create an understanding of the importance of human environments and artistic work.
Ben Frost was born in Brisbane, Australia. His work is not only very different but it’s quite large and bright and full of life. The majority of his pieces are of a collage style work and pop art, similar to Andy Warhol but modern and very vibrant work. Focussing on the ideas of the mainstream themes in the world, which are entertainment and politics with the aim of being quite confronting but gallant first glance. His art is a reflective representation of his inner city living in Sydney, surrounded by not only the crowds, but the scenery behind the outer layer. There are multiple focal points on any of his paintings as they are all collage style and the mixed type of images makes it difficult to select one exact message behind each picture. Apart from the already clear message, that each picture is a physiological story of how his life is a mixture of emotions, and how the city of Sydney is consecutive cycle of different patterns that connect together to make a whole. An example of this is made clear in one of his earlier pieces in 2008 – “Free While They Last.” The collage/painting has the word ‘LIFE’ written in big capital letters at the top of the page and every letter is in white colouring, except for the letter ‘F’ which is Grey. The grey F is a simple of life it’s self, meaning that sometimes it seems everyone around you seems to have it all together, while you’re falling into a bottomless pit and are a bit ‘out of colour’. This whole painting is a response to Ben’s life and his environment which happens to be a diverse part of Sydney Australia. It’s always bright and filled with noise, it’s never dull or lacking it’s ‘colour’. The whole photo which is based upon the theme of “Free while they last” and using happy faces, young children and images and ideas that are thought of with ‘freedom’ is made for the purpose to clearly state that while we are young and while we are living under happiness, there can be no stopping the feeling of freedom. It’s not until your colour wears out and you become a bit ‘grey’ your life will start. “Free while they last” – Ben Frost.
Pricilla Bracks was born in New-South Wales.
Interested in the web that is social behaviour; her work focuses on political, social and environmental issues. As well as studying the connections between human nature, the media and the law. These are her favourite topics and ideas to work from when she is creating her art. Her biggest project and idea is called ‘Making the Empire Cross’ and it is a number of series that investigate the creation of truth and how the relationships between images and media form new context to the world. ‘Bearded Orientals’ from ‘making the Empire Cross’ is a lenticular image which can make the audience flip between images of Osama bin Laden, Terrorist mastermind and Jesus Christ. It is an ideal example of ‘the creation of truth’ as it puts to very unalike characters together to create her truth of the world. Pricilla’s initial reasoning for her piece was to ask the people how we think of the world and what we are meant to accept, but what we don’t. Positing the idea of not only ‘comparing’ religious figure, Jesus Christ to once was the most wanted man Earth, Osama bin Laden together sparks a lot of controversy as they are both very different figures in History and are well known for the opposite reasons. But there’s one thing they have in common. The world knows both of them for the things they have done, and people either believe it to be right or believe it to be wrong. And the truth that Pricilla was trying to make is that in today’s society, even after Osama was killed and captured in 2012, the news and the public society cares more and focuses more on what is evil rather than good, because if we just accepted the good – there would be nothing to talk about. The picture is not only a confession and reality but also an underlying conception of the world we live in and a world we will always
know. ‘Bearded Orientals’ – Pricilla Bracks.
It is evident; through both different of pieces of art presented by Frost and Bracks that their beliefs and concerns are that of importance to society. Frost is passionate about changeling the modern normalities and values of Western culture and society with an aim to change mindsets and make people really think and discover what the world is about and how society is stuck in a never ending cycle. While Bracks is devoted to presenting juxtapositions and delivering work that has underlying messages of truth, speculation and complications of life. All tied together to reveal the secrets of life.
An environment can be defined as many things; a place in which you live in, an area in which your home is surrounded by, a life in which you imagine and/or a city in which you hope for. The human environment is how we affect and are affected by the environment, and also how we disturb the natural environment. In this case, Ben Frost and Pricilla Bracks – even though currently living in different environments to each other, they are both apart of the Australian environments which include our government, our multiculturalism and our ‘laid back’ type of attitude. All of these things come into place when creating art. The temperature, the city, the people, the news, the government, the landscape, the air you breathe and the things we see. These are the key components that manipulate and create art that we see today, not only through these two artists who are Australian based but artist’s all around the world. Your environment will not only produce your thoughts and feelings but it also manufactures your whole view on the world. Ben Frost and Pricilla Bracks are both very different and fantastic artists. Through their works “Free While They Last” and “Bearded Orientals” it is apparent that their work is challenging human kind to think beyond the borders and really question what life is all about.
