Human beings compete with other living things for resources and space. As the world’s population continues to increase, and standards of living improve, there is serious danger of a permanent change to the global environment. In the year 1800 the population was just 1billion, now it is more than 6 billion. With the population increasing the waste produced is also increasing and so is the pollution causing massive changes in the environment.
Pollution is a massive problem, our climate is slowly warming due to greenhouse gases, greenhouse gases are gases which trap the heat energy from the sun in the atmosphere. Methane and carbon dioxide are greenhouse gases, we need some greenhouse gases to keep the earth warm but we are now emitting to much so the earth is getting too hot. Carbon dioxide is produced by burning fossil fuels, globally cars account for 1/10 of Co2 emissions. 18% comes from the global livestock market. To measure how the climate has changed they take ice cores from the Antarctic and analyse the air trapped inside. They measure the levels of carbon dioxide and methane found in the air. When carbon dioxide is released it disperses evenly over the earth so the levels would be the same in the uk as in the Antarctic. In 17 years we have seen changes we would expect to see in 1000 years. Today’s temperature is 0.7 degrees warmer than the pre-industrial average.
Tropical sun fish are now being found in Cornwall when they are usually found in tropical regions showing how the planet must be warming for them to be able to live in Cornwall’s seas. Another animal causing confusion is the Mountain pine beetle found in Canada, it is responsible for devastating an area of trees bigger than England, it is no longer kept in check by the winter temperatures and is thriving in the warmer world.
Fossil fuels are a primary contributor to global warming, fossil fuels are non-renewable fuels such as oil and coal .We are having more heat waves and droughts, in 2003 a heat wave killed 52000 people and in California they had their worst wildfire 1.3 million acres were destroyed. Another major problem of global warming is the ice caps are melting causing sea levels to rise. In a 2 degree warmer world New York will suffer from major storm surges. In much the same way as they measure the changes in the air, they take cores from the earth and from that they can tell when New York has been hit by storm surges before.

In Spain they have the biggest solar power farms in Europe it currently powers 50000 homes. The oil in the tubes heats up which creates steam which is then turned into electricity. In Utah they will inject 1 million tons of Carbon dioxide into sandstone, because sandstone is porous it should absorb the Co2.
In the desert of the United Arab Emirates they are building an eco-city in which 90000 people will live and work there, the city will be powered by clean technologies so it will be carbon neutral. There will be no cars, instead residents will travel in driverless pods and zero carbon trains. It will be finished 2016 and offers an inspiring vision of the future.
In Arizona they have invented artificial trees which absorb carbon dioxide and when the plastic is dunked in water it emits the carbon dioxide making the trees completely reusable.

Human beings have inhabited the Earth for six or seven million years ("Natural History Museum", n.d.), but that is merely a fraction of the existence of this planet. Human beings have a penitence for gathering into groups and forming cities where industrial developments take place. The Industrial Revolution in America brought jobs and new products as well as technology. This is happening in other developing countries such as China and India today. Since our country has developed further into the digital age, our scientists have been able to observe the devastating effects that unregulated industry can have on the environment, and in turn, have on the people who dwell there. Now, there are many efforts in advancing our understanding and cohabitation with the natural world, and trying to reverse the damage that has been done.…

Mankind finds itself engaged in what Prince Charles described as ‘an act of suicide on a grand scale’ [4], facing what the UK’s Chief Scientific Advisor John Beddington called a ‘perfect storm’ of environmental problems [5]. The most serious of these problems show signs of rapidly escalating severity, especially climate disruption. But other elements could potentially also contribute to a collapse: an accelerating extinction of animal and plant populations and species, which could lead to a loss of ecosystem services essential for human survival. These are not separate problems; rather they interact in two gigantic complex adaptive systems: the biosphere system and the human socio-economic system. The human population size now is above the planet’s long-term carrying capacity is suggested (conservatively) by ecological footprint analysis [18–20]. It shows that to support today’s population of seven billion sustainably would require roughly half an additional planet; to do so, if all citizens of Earth consumed resources at the US level would take four to five more Earths. Adding the projected 2.5 billion more people by 2050 would make the human assault on civilization’s life-support systems disproportionately worse, because almost everywhere people face systems with nonlinear responses [11,21–23], in which environmental damage increases at a rate that becomes faster with each additional person. This is why environmental protection must be prioritized over resource extraction; environmental damage will cause…

Human’s steps on Earth were never so heavy until we started to exploit it for resources. Natural resources used to be thought to be limitless, but soon they will be gone. Everything on Earth is created to support life; instead of appreciating them, we take them for granted. As the population increases, the condition of the environment decreases. The more people there are, the more demand there is, and the more supply are needed.…

In Hilaire Belloc’s writing A Remaining Christmas, he discusses the importance of tradition and the dedication required to celebrate Christmas in an England home. Belloc goes into extreme detail while describing the required holiday preparations. The descriptions provide a reason as to why everything is taken so seriously. The Christmas traditions are followed precisely to preserve the meaning and representation of each event. Everything done and used during that time is symbolic and has a religious meaning.…

Some may ask what the Anthropocene is. Before this moment, I had never heard of it. The Anthropocene is very important because it is able to show just how humans have impacted the earth, and how we have changed it. As humans, we are pushing the wildlife into smaller areas as we create new homes, and disrupt their habitat. The earth is facing its sixth extinction, and studies show that humans are to blame. This does not mean every single animal species has suffered a loss of 25%. Some are impacted more than others. Humans are to blame, as the killing of animals, and change of habitat are two major factors in the decline of species. Not only are animals being killed, but we are also polluting the air we breathe. The most familiar change according…

As the global population expanded at an unprecedented rate, humans fundamentally changed their relationship with the environment. Human’s population growth changed their relationship with the environment for the worse and did not change until environmental issues were realized and people realized they needed to do something to stop more environmental damage to the earth. Humans exploited and competed over the earth’s finite resources more intensely than ever before inhuman history. Also, global warming was a major consequence of the release of greenhouse gases and other pollutants into the atmosphere. However, in the 1970s governments took initiatives to preserve and protect the environment.…

Second, overpopulation is expected to have far-reaching, long-lasting and, in many cases, devastating consequences on our environment. The groundbreaking rate in which the human population has grown, has had immeasurable impacts on the survival of species. Forests are being torn down as more wood and land is needed to support our ever-growing population. When a section of forest is cut down and replaced with farmland or residential areas, the living places of hundreds of species are eliminated. In addition, for decades, many landfill managers have been emphasizing just how quickly they are running out of space. The more people there are on the planet, the more waste is being produced. Some of this waste is quite toxic, and even landfills (which are double-lined) are finding that…

Environmental problems have always been man made, but never before on such a perilous scale. One of the worst impacts of population explosion has shown itself through global warming. “The coal and oil that have fueled the growth of industrialized countries have also fueled the warming of the Earth. Roughly 75% of the man-made global warming pollution currently in the atmosphere comes from industrialized nations.” (Sierra Club) These harmful effects of environmental change are creating problems in areas where population growth may not be an issue of over population. “For example, in Arctic regions, structures built atop permafrost are collapsing. Polar ice is melting, releasing freshwater flows that may alter the great ocean circulations, changing climates, temperatures, and agricultural production over vast areas.” (Counsel for Secular Humanism) Other problems that are affecting our environment are forest encroachment, deforestation, fuel-wood depletion, soil erosion, declining…

Humans have impacted each and every-one of these cycles in different ways throughout time and keep increasing as time goes on. All living things are made of carbon. Carbon is also in the air, water and rocks. The humans have impacted the Carbon Cycle by releasing a large amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This is caused by the burning of oil, natural gases and coal. All these release carbon dioxide and other types of water molecules into the air.…
