What is Interpersonal Communication?
According to DeVito, interpersonal communication is defined as “The verbal and nonverbal interaction between two (or more) interdependent people”. Interpersonal Communication is defined by Redmond and Beebe as “a distinctive form of human communication that occurs when you interact with another person and mutually influence each other usually for the purpose of maintaining relationships”.
Characteristics of interpersonal communication: 1. Interdependent individuals 2. Relational 3. Verbal & nonverbal messages 4. Continuum 5. Various forms
Characteristics of interpersonal communication: 1. Interdependent individuals Communicating individuals are connected and interdependent. What one person does has an impact on the other person. Examples of interdependent people would include a father and son, two lovers, two friends, and small, intimate groups like families

Characteristics of interpersonal communication: 2. Relational The way you communicate is determined in great part by the kind of relationship that exists between you and the communication partner. e.g., you will speak differently to your roommate than you would with the Dean of Students. The way you communicate will influence the kind of relationship you develop. What you say and how you act with different people will have positive and negative influences on the relationship.
