“There is growing concern about young people's exposure to sexual content through television and other electronic media and about its potential effects on their sexual attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. Researchers have documented the growing prevalence of sexual talk and portrayals of sexual behavior in televised media, as well as associations between adolescent viewing patterns and their sexual activities.”
Believe it or not 80 percent of all of our favorite cable programs content sexual activities, even the music videos we allow our children to watch every morning while they are getting ready for school. 90 percent of which we as guardians do not screen correctly and feel as if it their just entertainment; nothing to serious. Which sadly is the one of the main factors that contributes to one of the highest pregnancy rate amongst teens in the western hemisphere.
One of main messages and issues that relates to sexuality, is the increase of sexual intercourse amongst the preteen and young adult generations. The messages that are transmitted in the music, shows, movies, magazines, and books allows young teens to believe there is nothing wrong with being a little promiscuous and it’s all about self control. It is a bit difficult to say it is about self-control when 50 percent of their lives are influenced by what they see and hear their idols do and say. For example songs like Invented Sex by Trey Songz, S&M by Rihanna, Body party by Ciara and etc. are being played by the second on every car stereo, and listened to through headphones with just right amount of bass to make the feeling/ music feel so real that it awake a sensation that cause an instead sexual crave.
The way the media presents sexuality amongst teens seem be accepted, it praises 16 years olds and their journey through adolescent pregnancy. It almost leads them to believe that life is all about fast money, luxury cars, superbly enhanced body parts and a crave for sexual desire to be just fine, and not about the fact that education should be your top goal in life. The media isn’t aware on the risk that they put this young generations in, and their contribution to the quickly developing pregnancies rate amongst the ages 13 to 18 age range not knowing that 75 percent of them do not go on to continuing their education and those that actually do never finish their 4 year college degrees. My opinion on the affects that the media has on the human sexuality has change after writing this paper; I never realize how much of an affected it actually had on the young mind and even on young adults like myself. Many say its about self control and knowing what’s real and what’s not but my beliefs are that we all allow the media to consume almost 60 to 65 percent of our daily lives without even knowing it, it baffles me that we are so brain washed to the point that it goes undetected. I grew in a generation where your TV time was limited to an 1 hour, every book you read was prescreened by your parents, songs were family friendly and every friend you had was predetermined for you and whether or not you were allowed to befriend them. This generation is in for a rude awaken hopefully as guardians, parents, and older siblings that we feel the need to closely watch our children and help undo the damage that has been done to their young minds already and reinstallation the fundamental of abstinence and education back into this generation.

The Kaiser Family Foundation reports show that almost two thirds of all television shows air overtly sexual material. Studies show that being exposed to drug use, sex or violence onscreen can make them more acceptable in reality. In 2002 Madeline A. Dalton and her colleagues at Dartmouth Medical School analyzed R-rated films and their influence in connection with children, the media and risky behaviors. Surveys were conducted on about 4,500 students, ages 10 to 14. Data was collected on many factors influencing their lives (parenting characteristics, school performances, and general rebelliousness.) In this study they found 35 percent of the teens watching r-rated films had smoked and 46 percent tried alcohol. The teens that didn’t watch r-rated films were at one third the risk of smoking and drinking with all factors accounted…

The effects of media portrayal of sexuality on adolescent’s sexual lives are enormous because, media in our society today portrays acts of sexuality as routine and probable. They show young girls as being enticing or promiscuous and portrays young men as sexual predators or manipulative into pressuring young ladies into having sex. The media have shown acceptance of gays and lesbians than years prior, but with this the media knows that younger viewers of television, radio, and internet are more venerable than its adult viewer’s ("Wjm Western Journal of Medicine", 2000).…

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 86 percent of mothers who give birth out-of-wedlock are teenagers. MTV’s show “16 & Pregnant,” which has only been on air since June 2009, is already reflecting the rapid boom in teenage pregnancy across various cities in America. Since the early eighties MTV has been considered somewhat of a cultural phenomenon for American adolescents and its depiction of gender has a strong impact that continues to this day (Holtzman 2000). Created by Morgan J. Freeman (director of teen shows Dawson’s Creek and Laguna Beach), the show “16 & Pregnant” has been said to be guilty of exacerbating, normalizing and even glorifying teen pregnancy. Perhaps, it’s just reflecting a current social dilemma occurring amongst female youth. Each week a new episode revolves around a different girl struggling with the challenges of teenage pregnancy. The network presents these characters as “real”, plucked from the grips of reality, validated and “chosen” to represent some sort of normalized or otherwise glamorized middle-class identity of teenage motherhood. The show depicts women’s roles that are often typified to include traditional gendered norms of heterosexual relationships, marriage, motherhood and femininity. “16 & Pregnant” serves as a platform to broadcast what is seen as a stereotypical American culture that is now engulfing teen girls everywhere. The social identities MTV presents reinforces those of traditional female roles and gender norms and attempts to establish a new model for pregnant teens in a modern age.…

Teresita went to a fraternity party because she'd heard that this fraternity "really knew how to have fun" and she really needed fun after a disastrous academic week. She knew that some women had been taken advantage of at previous parties, but she put that out of her mind, as she downed one drink after another. Just when things were getting dull, the coolest guy on campus took her by the hand, led her upstairs and talked her into having sex. The next day, Teresita noticed that her vagina was bruised and bleeding. She barely recalled having sex, but knew who was responsible for her condition, and filed rape charges against him with the campus administrator.…

Society’s attitude towards sexual behavior is more tolerant and permissive now than ever before. Entertainment directed at a teen audience is much more sexually explicit allowing teens to believe that sexual activity is something common that everyone in society does. The popular series “Twilight” is a perfect example because although the book is meant for a teen audience, it contains a sexual nature. Another example would be the TV show, “16 and Pregnant” which glamourizes the issue of teen pregnancy. These new social norms make teenagers feel that it is accepted behavior to become sexually active at a…

Second, youth are now becoming exposed more frequently to specific issues that may not be appropriate for their age group, and are causing young women to sexualize themselves, their norms and behaviours at a younger age. For example: in today’s society, more young women are learning how to use make up at a younger age, causing them to look older than they are. As well, television shows that these young adolescents watch expose them to sexual content and these young people feel if they are mature enough to watch it, why not learn to do it as well. Correspondingly, there has been this moral panic around younger women becoming more sexual and promiscuous at a younger age due in large part to the advertisements and messages in the media that show these…

The effects of the media’s portrayal on sexuality on adolescent’s lives are vast. Most media in today’s society portrays acts of sexuality as commonplace and expected. It shows young girls being flirtatious and having sex. It shows young men as sexual predators or pressuring the girls. It is far and few between that a show displays age appropriate sexuality for it’s viewers. The media also represent’s young gays and lesbians more readily than it would have years ago. I think this is a good idea since that demographic of viewer base has increased greatly. This increased awareness for young people has both positive and negative impacts. The increased awareness of the effects of sexuality in early ages such as pregnancy and STD’s are more prevalent than in yester years. However, the increased stimuli of sexuality leads to more exploration of our younger generations to have sex earlier than they should be and producing babies at a younger age as well as they are contracting more STD’s. I think the media’s influence on our future generations needs to be tempered and that is the job of the parent or caregiver. The media’s portrayal of sexuality has not has as great an effect on my life as it could have as I do not watch much TV and tend to read more often than watch a movie. The media has more of an impact on those around me and influences me through them. My friends have an intense amount of pornography that they watch and it makes them see women as objects instead of as human beings. They want to go to Hooters instead of a nice restaurant. This is because the advertising for Hooters portrays the women working as waitresses there as sexual objects much like their pornography does. My nieces and nephews play video games with…

Curiosity and the desire to have sex for young teens is inevitable, even if the teens did not see it on television. People believe television has a negative influence on teens’ sexual activity. Their belief that sex is portrayed as a “fun, casual activity” on television is a misconception. Viewers are able to see the consequences of sexual activity through the lives of others on television. Collins argues that “TV plays a role in hastening the initiation of sexual activity,” (Collins qtd. Rottenberg 543). however, her point is rebutted because MTV’s show, 16 & Pregnant, clearly illustrates the consequences of teens who engage in sexual activity at a young age. This show documents the lives of young pregnant teens extensively in order to educate viewers about the impact of careless sexual activity. According to an article in The Independent Florida Alligator, written by Jensen Werley, Bruce Floyd, a social media specialist for UF University Relations, says that “these [shows] could encourage teenagers to think critically about the consequences of pregnancy,” which supports the fact that television has a positive influence on teens’ sexual activity. Floyd continues, “MTV shoes could help educated people how teen pregnancy is not glamorous and can change your life dramatically,” which contradicts Collins’ idea that “sex is often presented as a casual activity without risk or consequences” (Collins qtd. Rottenberg…

Today, with the technology available, people are easily connected to the media whether it is for the news, the season premiere of an upcoming televised series, or the recent release of a video from a YouTube producer. Along with the mainstream media, people are flooded with hidden messages and exposed to unwanted materials. The modern American culture is based on the contents of media and is recycled through a process of demands and contributions. As a result, the American culture is exposed to a steady increase of sexualization within mainstream media, especially the hyper-sexualization of women (Task Force, 4). The American culture is exposing future generations to a world where sex is mainstream and popularized. Through the social learning…

Among the various messages, sexual-related issues are the one of categories that can be seen everywhere since it is available anytime. For instance, as examined in the article by “Pediatrics”, “music lyrics and TV content don’t discuss the dangers of sexual activity and consequences such as unplanned pregnancy or STDs.”(Morin 1-2). The message from the media is unreliable for adolescents because it only indulges in sex not expressing the dangers. Kids see these behaviors as normal and acceptable when few people actually live this way. As Well, as expressed in the article published by “Livestrong”, the author explained, “that men are often portrayed as sex driven, and women and sex objects,”(Morin 1-2). Teaching kids that males are dominant and females are toy to be thrown around diminishes values and defeats the point of gender equality. Young boys grow up believing all women behave like the women in music videos. Their unrealistic views on relationships could prove disastrous or even dangerous. Sexual music lyrics or Tv shows diminish a sense of gender equality and encourages sexual behaviors leading to serious…
