Last, he uses humor through the setting. In addition to this humor, there is also an important theme. Readers will be hooked with the incredible medieval twist. Gardner doesn't disappoint his audience. John Gardner delivers a setting with modern day advances in medieval times. He is incorporating spark plugs and cigars to his story “Dragon,Dragon”. When the green beast comes out of his lair when there is a full moon and ravages the countryside. The author creates an absent minded wizard,
which, adds to the humorous tone. For example, the wizard states, “But I've lost my spell book and I'm starting to fear I'm losing my memory too.” As Gardner makes the story humorous, he also teaches a lesson: always listen to your elders. The cobbler tells his sons “When and if you come to the vicious mammal lair recite the following poem.” The narrator also uses humor through imagery by making the youngest son borrow armor and sword extended over his head and when he put the armor on he could barely stand. It is a hilarious tale because the readers are wondering how the youngest boy is going to slay the green beast. Gardner creates humor while, teaching a lesson to all who read this incredible tale.
