According to architect Rem Koolhaas (2003), Globalization is an on-going process of national cohesion together through urban areas. These areas are the economic, political, cultural and social focal points of each country. Because of benefits brought when cities promote economy, exchange diplomatic, transfer technology and culture, they gradually formed a network among cities by global relationships. These cities are called “Global cities” which, for example, are New York, London, Tokyo and Paris, four of the most famous metropolises in the world. Therefore, because of advantages of globalization, Vietnam in general and Hanoi (capital city of Vietnam) in specific also have tried to be a link in the global relationships chain. After a very long period of effort, Vietnam finally can engage in globalization process, it is an entry as the 150th member of World Trade Organization (WTO). In this context, Hanoi can be seen to have joined the global network of cities, which gives the nation as well as city good opportunities to develop economy, and society.
This essay aims to understand and analyze the positive impact of this process on the urban space in Hanoi. The essay is divided into two parts. The first part collects information and data to get a basic picture of the situation involved in the process of globalization of Vietnam in general and Hanoi in particular to answer the question " How has Hanoi been involved in globalization”. The final part of the text is a brief survey of urban space of Hanoi, identifying the recent change in the overall picture, at a certain level, to answer the question, "How globalization has affected the space of Hanoi".
