Geography Hypatia lived in Greece, one of the greatest civilizations ever. Greeks lived on Rocky Mountainous lands surrounded by lots of water, almost completely surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. The main part of Greece was on the other peninsula, which has more than 140 tiny islands coming off of it. There are few valleys or flat land for farming.

They each had their own government, laws, and had their own way of doing things. They all shared a couple things like their language and belief in gods. For the most part, Greece began having monarchies, then oligarchies, then tyrannies and then democracies. Hypatia was born in Alexandria, Egypt but traveled abroad to Athens, Greece and attended a school where she established her fame as a mathematician. In Egypt, they had very fertile land great for farming. The fertile lands were caused by the Nile river flooding. This coated the land with rich silt each year. Ancient Egypt had two regions, a southern region, and a northern region. The southern region was called Upper Egypt because of the water flow of the Nile river.
