All cells are controlled by a cell membrane or plasma membrane that keeps the materials inside. When I think of a cell membrane I think of a grocery bag with small holes, the bag grasps all of the cell parts and fluids in the bag. The …show more content…
The cell membrane or also plasma membrane is selectively permeable that controls what goes into the cell and out the cell and also guards the cell from its surroundings. The structure of a cell membrane is composed of four types of molecules: phospholipids, cholesterol, proteins, and carbohydrates. The structure of a cell membrane is not solid because the cells are able to move around within the cell. Phospholipids, which cell membranes, are based on lipid bilayer. Phospholipids contain two ends, a head and a tail. The head end is hydrophilic which means it is water loving, polar, and is attracted to water molecules. The tail end is hydrophobic which is created by carbon and hydrogen atoms called fatty acid chains, they are water fearing, nonpolar, and do not mix with water molecules. Cell membranes include cholesterol in the phospholipid bilayer. Cholesterol is a lipid carried in the blood; it gives the cell membrane flexibility and is used to make steroids such as testosterone and estrogen. Cholesterol molecules are valuable to the cell membrane because they support the membrane by stopping small molecules from crossing the membrane. A cell membrane contains several proteins. Proteins are
