The endocrine system is a series of glands within the body. These gland impact a lot of our body including calcium levels and what we find joy in ( the pituitary gland releases dopamine if we enjoy something). Because there are so many glands in our bodies, there are a lot of things that can go wrong. Two of the things that could go wrong are Hyperthyroidism (overactive Thyroid) and Hypothyroidism (underactive Thyroid). While they are both malfunctions of the Thyroid gland, Hyperthyroidism has more impact on not just teens, but everyone, than Hypothyroid does. Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid gland releases too much T-3 and T-4. Hypothyroidism is, alternatively, when the Thyroid does not release enough T-3 or T-4. A few of the main causes of Hyperthyroidism are Graves disease and toxic adenoma. Hypothyroidism is caused by iodine deficiency, radioactive treatments, and even by the treatments for Hyperthyroidism. Because of this, Hyperthyroidism becomes an even more daunting disease. …show more content…
Complications that are derived from Hyperthyroidism are eye problems which could potentially lead to total loss of vision, brittleness of bones, and heart problems like atrial fibrillation and heart failure caused by congestion. Hypothyroidism complications could include infertility and birth defects caused by treatment of the disease. Complications could also include depression and a slowed mental function. The potential loss of vision is a life changing thing and the possible heart problems caused by Hyperthyroidism could be fatal. Some unlisted Hypothyroidism complication are the same as that of Hyperthyroid but those listed here are either not as severe, can be corrected through surgery and medication, or are not potentially life threatening. Hyperthyroidism can be corrected with a radioactive iodine supplement (it has been proven generally safe for the public), a thyroidectomy to remove a part of the thyroid, anti-thyroid medications, and Beta blockers ( these are to resolve the heart palpitations and fibrillations).
Hypothyroid can be treated with a synthetic thyroid medication or with a transplant of a pig’s thyroid gland if the condition was caused by a partially formed or the lack of a thyroid gland. Hypothyroidism is easier to resolve than Hyperthyroidism even though Hyperthyroidism has a wider variety of treatment options. Though they are very similar, I believe that Hyperthyroidism has a bigger impact than Hypothyroidism. Though many symptoms overlap each other, some complications are the same or relatively so, and they are both diseases of the Thyroid gland, I believe Hyperthyroidism has a larger impact on, not only the youth of the world, but the entire
population.
