Hyunjoon Stereotypes In Coeducational Schools
John Dewey, an American philosopher and psychologist,made the statement, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself” (Fullan 264). Controversy shows a benefit to sending children to coeducational or single-sex schools. Although, lacking proof, certain schools can provide better education for specific genders. Since students who attend coeducational schools progress further on cognitive abilities and improve academically, children should attend gender diverse schools. Students in schools should think about the consequences when deciding which school adolescents would benefit by more. Many children prevailed of that each gender should behave and learn differently to confirm the stereotypes of society might prove true. Hyunjoon …show more content…
However, a classroom proves to hold one of the primary places that different genders revealed by other students and even teachers. Erin Palkhe, Ph.D. in Psychology strongly argued, In co-educational schools many think that the level of knowledge increases for girls but the truth justifies that boys statistically tend to become smarter in unexpected subjects (Palkhe 1). Because of the acceptance of these stereotypes, each child has to face a battle individually for themselves to stand up and prove that the theory said about themselves in not true. Teachers must also show an important factor by holding each student up with the same standards and expectations. Children along with parent(s) need to realize everyone hits bumps with either school chosen. The American Psychology Association, writer Amy Novotney conveyed, No matter where your child decides to attend school everyone will show advantages and disadvantages within the school (Novotney 1). Therefore, how good or bad the stories of specific schools that people told their experiences about, both types of the schools benefit and decel. In the article, The Resurgence of Single-Sex Education, Melinda Anderson expressed, people also say there’s a lack of evidence that these differences matter to learning at the individual level (Anderson 1).Coeducational schools and single sex schools may teach different curriculum to their students but a graduate of one school excels the same at another.     Sexism is another stereotype that is created in the classroom that can have social and academic effects on individuals. Research shows that an oppressive classroom environment impairs learning and academic performance for students oppressed with identities (Pitman, 2010). Sexism in education occurs at an early age. While children of both sexes typically play together, as they get older they spend less and less time playing with children of the opposite sex. When students are lined up according to gender, teachers are stating that boys and girls should be treated differently. When different behaviors are acceptable for boys and not girls because boys will be boys, schools and administrators continue the oppression of girls. Now a days schools are looking for ways to increase student motivation and academic achievement which ought to consider offering single-gender classrooms as one highly effective change that can address students’ needs. The single-gender education is a legal option for any K-12 public schools. Our state has 160 schools now offering these options for students. One of the highest in the nation is in Washington and 100 more already considered doing so for the 2010-11 school year. Currently, single-gender classes are offered in kindergarten through 9th grade in urban, rural, and suburban districts across the state. While these types of teaching approaches may be thought to improve grades, test scores and college acceptance rates, there’s some evidence that shows sex-segregated classes improve educational outcomes. A 2005 U.S. Department of Education comparison of same-sex and coeducational schools found studies examining academic benefits and concluded that the results are mixed and conclusive enough for the department to endorse single-sex education.
