I Am The Highway
“I am the Highway” by Audioslave is a song that came out in 2002 as a single from Audioslave’s self titled debut album, Audioslave. The song is a poem, the words taken literally don't make much sense, but by breaking it down, you come to find that it means much more than the literal meaning. It is the story of a man that is beaten down and weary from a toxic relationship, where he was unappreciated and undervalued, but there is hope for him because on his own, though he loved her, he knows that he no longer has to deal with her tearing him down and walking all over him.
The song starts with a biblical reference in the first verse. “Pearls and swine, Bereft of me”(Lines 1-2) This is a reference to the book of Matthew chapter 7 verse 6, “Do not give what is

He ends the verse with this,
I put millions of miles
Under my heels
And still too close
To you, I feel, yeah (Lines 17-20)
He means that no matter how far away he gets, either physically from her, or emotionally from the relationship, it'll never be far enough because the pain it put him though will never be forgotten and he can't escape it, he must simply live with it. Though he is free of her burdens, he may not fully circumvent the impact it had on his life. But in the end, though damaged, he feels unrestrained, and almost physically unbound by the metaphorical bonds placed on him. The song ends with him restating that nobody owns him, let alone her. The outro is an extended chorus, he sings,
I am not your rolling wheels
I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky
I am not your blowing wind
I am the lightning
I am not your autumn moon
I am the night, the night. (Lines 21-28)
He is not hers, he is wild, and untameable, as is the theme of poem. He takes pain, and rids himself of its source, looking to the future optimistically as a free

The Devil’s Highway by Luis Alberto Urrea traces the journeys of twenty-six men traveling across the border through one of the most treacherous deserts known to man “The Devil’s Highway.” The author’s purpose was to let the world be aware of the events going on all around, with the simple modes of persuasion (pathos, ethos, and logos) Urrea makes you consider what worlds, political and economic, have we created that push humans into impossible journeys? What borders have we imposed, both geopolitical and cultural, that separate human beings so completely?…

Have you ever wonder why they built borders? Or who built them? Or who prevents and controls illegals from crossing, and what they do to accomplish them from crossing? In the book, The Devils Highway, by Luis Alberto Urrea defines the effects the desert has to offer for the immigrant’s entrance. The Devils High Way is a measureless desert past Mexico and Sonora, which is one of the most isolated and driest deserts in the U.S. This is a desert which few people confront to cross through, some barley make it out alive. In the year of 2001 and the month of May, a group of undocumented Mexican walkers were left for death, stuck in the Devils Highway after walking for days in the wrong path, through the deserts and mountains, with only a few quantity of water.…

She is displayed as a bitter, hateful character who seeks revenge, shown with ‘not a day since then I haven’t wished him dead’ and ‘give me a male corpse for a long slow honeymoon’. This is almost contrasted with her loneliness and sexual frustration explored in the first stanza, with ‘some nights better, the lost body over me, my fluent tongue in it’s mouth in it’s ear then down till I suddenly bite awake.’…

First of all, this poem is written in a first person’s point of view. She begins by telling the reader the cause of her pain and suffering – her “beloved sweetheart bastard” which gravitates into a sense of bitterness and vengeance/retribution. In addition to that, the use of oxymoron in the above-said phrase indicates a contradiction of words. The words “beloved” and “sweetheart” indicates a very admirable personality, but the word “bastard” gives us a completely conflicting quality. Besides, she tells us that she not only wished him to be dead, but instead she prayed for his death, evidently by “Not a day since then I haven’t wished him dead. Prayed for it…” She prayed so hard that she had “dark green pebbles for eyes and ropes on the back of my hands she could strangle with.” She uses metaphors here to explain to us that while she prayed, she had her eyes shrunk hard and felt that her hands were strong enough to strangle someone, which fits her murderous personality. It makes us feel piteous for her as seeing that she has suffered a great amount until it has reached insanity, but at the same time it makes us feel really disturbed by her mad identity.…

The sixth verse from the lyrics states that “Made me cross the street the other day” and “Made you turn your head the other way” (22, 24). These two lines is a result of racism’s presence in public, and they can be interpreted as interaction between person of color and a white person walking on the street. The first line is from the perspective of the white person, and he cross the street to avoid walking behind or encountering the person of color. On the contrary, the latter line is from the point of view of the person of color, and it describes that he or she has made the white person turn away his head as the white person wants to avoid eye contact with the person of color. This interpretation makes sense as each comes after “Chocolate…

More specifically, Labé is describing the unpredictability of love, and how inconsistent her relationship is, which is comparable to her emotions in the previous lines of the poem. Her statement that she “suffers” these contradicting emotions leads to the idea that she has resigned to love’s fate, and has possibly accepted it (9). This theme continues, with Labé writing, “And when I think the pain is most intense / Without thinking, it is gone again” (10-11). This acts an accurate depiction of the ebb and flow of a relationship. Rough patches are a natural part of a relationship, as well as life, where heartbreak brings pain, but once the rough patch is over, the pain is gone.…

The bitch, which represents the speaker’s inner self, begins to whimper and “wants to snuggle up to him, to cringe” [Kizer 949 line 12] which indicates that although the speaker hates this man, there is still a part of her that longs to be by his side again and be submissive. The speaker then goes on to scold the inner self for wanting to return, despite the lover being cold and distant, as evident when she writes “How she lay at his feet and looked up adoringly/ though he was absorbed in his paper;/ Or, bored with her devotion, ordered her to the kitchen/ Until he was ready to play” [Kizer 949 lines 20 – 23]. As the poem comes to a close, the speaker remains polite to the ex-lover while the “bitch” is forced away, signifying that the hatred still remains deep within the…
