I DO, I DO Ever wonder what it would be like to never grow up; to never take showers; never be told what to do, or when to do it? Ever think about running away from home; what would it be like to never be loved by parents or family, or to never feel the sense of well-being? Peter Pan was one of those kids that never truly felt loved and never wanted to grow-up. He is known as “The lost boy”. On December 7, 1941, one of our former Presidents; President Franklin D. Barrie was a Scottish dramatist whose father was a weaver. Barrie wanted to leave his home to become a journalist. He moved to London and became a play writer. He met a struggling Lawyer Arthur Llewelyn Davies and his wife Sylvia. They had five boys. Barrie became an older brother like figure to these boys. For holidays, and special occasions he would spend money on the boys, buying the family cars and holidays to different parts of the world, even though they were dirt pour, Barrie gave the family hope and love back into the family. When the boy’s parents passed away, Barrie focused his attention on still being the brother like figure and not a father like figure to these “Lost Boys”. He would play games; tell stories of pirates, and mermaids, in a fantasy world “Neverland”. This characteristic that Barrie possessed the body of an adult but the mind of a child this will be later known as the “Peter Pan Syndrome” (University of Granada). When Steven was in high school he produced his first feature- length film, “Firelight”, a science fiction movie with only a budget of $400, foreshadowing his love for filming. After his parents divorced, Spielberg attended California State University, Long Beach, and got his first job as an unpaid intern in the editing department of Universal Studios, after jumping off a tour bus and venturing his way inside of the studios, he made a big impression on one of the workers onset, and he gave Steven a pass to come back the next day and watch the directors work, after the fourth day he would just wave at all the security officers, instead of showing him his pass. Steven had to work hard and he is now an American Film director, screen writer, and film producer. In 1991, he wrote a sequel to Barrie’s, Peter Pan story, titled Hook. Although Spielberg did not have the background of how Peter Pan came to be, this movie was viewed by as many as Peter Pan. (Biography Channel)
There are many similarities and differences in the two movies of Peter Pan and Hook. Similarities include: The main characters- Peter Pan, Wendy, Hook, Tinker Bell, Mr. Smee, Tick- Tock the Crocodile. The location the stories took place in London, Never Land. Hook losing his hand to Tick Tock the crocodile. The make believe, and how Peter was able to make things appear.
