On the 28th day of August 1963, at The Lincoln monument in Washington D.C., stands Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. a Baptist preacher and civil rights activist. As he is introduced the crowd erupts in applause and cheers. As King addresses the nation to persuade them to take a stand together for equality, freedom and to stand up against political and social injustice, and to push through the civil rights legislation that was before Congress.
1963 was the Centennial of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. The tension was high especially in the south; In January, Governor Wallace gave his inauguration speech promoting segregation in Alabama. The speech was …show more content…
King was not even supposed to speak but no one wanted to fill the last spot because they figured that most of the reporter would have left by then so Dr. King agreed to speak. As Dr. King began to deliver the speech that was written by his lawyer, the crowd was intently listening to his every word. You could tell as he was delivering his speech that he was reading it word for word as he would repetitiously look down at the podium, then up to the crowd. As he spoke of the check unable to be cashed due to insufficient funds the crowd applauded as they could relate to the metaphor. Dr. Kings’ deliver didn’t have as much impact until half way through the speech when he started talking about I have a dream, upon research it was found out that singer Mahalia Jackson who was sitting behind Dr. King stood up and shouted “tell them about the dream”. This was in reference to a speech he gave in Detroit two months earlier. The speech takes a turn a as Dr. King continues to tell people about the dream, he looks to the sky and at the crowd he doesn’t look back down at the podium for the duration of the speech. Speaking prophetically, of the future with equality and unity of mankind where people are judged by their character not the color of their
