I Hear America Singing Essay

Whitman uses many images in the poem “I Hear America Singing” to describe a joyous, industrious America that is happily engaged in normal, daily work. In the initial line of this poem, Whitman states “I hear America singing” (Whitman). By choosing this phrase and repeatedly using this phrase throughout the poem, Whitman creates a unified tone and image of the American work force that happily contributes to this nation. Simply by choosing the word “singing”, Whitman’s poem embodies a mood of celebration(Whitman). Every worker, the mason, the carpenter, and even the young mother, are cheerfully working on each’s tasks which creates an image of a young, vibrant, productive America (Whitmn). By describing the American workforce with musical terms,
