I Lived By Onerepublic: Poem Analysis
“With every broken bone I swear I lived” is one of the most repeated sentence in the entire song and, I believe, the one that resonates the most. In the song “I Lived” by OneRepublic, it appears that it is the story of a parent telling their child all of the wishes he or she has for them in their adventures and life. The song “I Lived” best applies to my life, not only because of my relationship with my family, but because of my personal beliefs as well.
In the summer, my family made the brave and exciting decision to host an exchange student for a year. At first, the decision did not seem at large as it was. What was another human in a house holding four already? But, as weeks passed and the preparation had began and ended, the day where

Stanford and University of California alumni Sandra Lim reads from The Wilderness on April 7, 2015, at Prairie Lights. As an alumna from the International Writing Program Lim was making her return back to Iowa City after 11 years. In The Wilderness Lim reads a collection of poems about love, spring and one poem that caught my attention was about the individual struggle of one's body within one’s mind. The poems are open to many interpretations but that is the way that I chose to interpret that poetry in particular. The interesting thing about Lim’s poem is how describes the body parts in some of her poems. It is very vague. It almost makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable but at the same time, I really like her style. The way she describes…

‘The Waking’ is a contemporary jazz piece written by American vocalist, Kurt Elling, and features Theodore Roethke’s 1954 poem of the same title. Released in 2007 on the album Nightmoves, Elling uses musical techniques to enhance the message of Roethke’s poem. However, in order to understand the reasoning behind the devices Elling has used, the meaning of Roethke’s poem must first be discussed.…

    Roadblocks: Poem Analysis

Many writers on their venture to becoming great, are faced with roadblocks. I too feel those stresses. When sitting down to begin a story, novel, or poem we all strive to be different. But as Baldwin explains, "there is no original thought, because we all humans think and feel has been thought and felt so many times before, by so many generations." This in itself makes starting writing a very daunting task. Not to mention the sea of fellow authors you are competing with for limited shelf space. A trip to a jam packed bookstore reiterates this feeling instantaneously. Really, what sets the writer apart is the original perspective and finding out what shape to give it to really hold the readers attention. This can all be achieved through the power in…

Nothing about life is easy; you work, you try, and sometimes you fail regardless of your efforts. Some people believe in reincarnation, others in some form of an afterlife, and some believe you only have one life. Believing that you’re only able to live one life could benefit the person because they take that idea and they accept it. In that acceptance they choose to live everyday as if it were there last, so that by their last breath they can say they had a good life, even with the many struggles and heartache. Most people live with the belief that we only have one life; although life is a gift with endless possibilities, it's…

The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…

At first my mom and dad tried to hide the divorce from us and lie about why one parent wasn't here when the other one was, and that really made an impact on me, but my brother doesn't remember much so it doesn't effect him like it does me. I was old enough to realize that something wasn't right only because I knew who they both really were on the inside and something was missing from them. This song represents a time in my life when my life was really hard and going downhill. I started failing tests and getting really low scores on our STAR tests. I believe that the hardest part for me was that they lied about everything because I will never forget that wether they know that or…

In the poem “To This Day” by Shane Koyczan he shows that people that get bullied constantly aren’t able to blow stuff off as easy as others. In the poem he shows that some people need motivation and help. He shows this by stating in the poem,”We are not abandoned cars stalled out… and if in some way we are don’t worry we only got out to walk and get gas”. Gas could symbolize getting help from someone they know and trust, or could be trying to get help with therapy or things of that nature. Another meaning could be that they need to get motivation to keep going from something. The dark background colors could mean that they need better things to happen to get motivation from.…

A poet relates to the world by constructing their identity through their performance in public spaces. At Outspoken Live, poet Lisa Luxx performed ‘He Sounds Just Like Me’, a moving poem about her being adopted by a British family and her longing for the “absent root” in which she came from Syria. The audiences’ mood changes when Luxx says “[Syria]…is followed by silence”. This eerily captures the atmosphere in the venue. The silent audience shows their awareness of the conflict in Syria, brought to them on a stage in Oxford Circus through Luxx’s performance.…
