Roadblocks: Poem Analysis
Many writers on their venture to becoming great, are faced with roadblocks. I too feel those stresses. When sitting down to begin a story, novel, or poem we all strive to be different. But as Baldwin explains, "there is no original thought, because we all humans think and feel has been thought and felt so many times before, by so many generations." This in itself makes starting writing a very daunting task. Not to mention the sea of fellow authors you are competing with for limited shelf space. A trip to a jam packed bookstore reiterates this feeling instantaneously. Really, what sets the writer apart is the original perspective and finding out what shape to give it to really hold the readers attention. This can all be achieved through the power in …show more content…
In poetry for instance, the writer has the ability to say a lot with few words. They can present a problem and a solution, and leave the reader with their own individual points to ponder. In short stories, the writer is given the opportunity to open a window into a situation and let the reader be a voyeur of some sorts in their story. This allows the reader to find significance and tie up loose ends on their own. A novel however, allows the writer room to stretch, place to expound and philosophize. Basically, every word and detail must be there for a reason. It doesn't give the reader much room to imagine, but rather paint them a vivid picture of what is being portrayed. In any form of writing, I agree with Baldwin that the power of the written word can transform your life and raise your thoughts above the mundane tasks of daily life. For both the writer, and the eager reader. So through all these ups and downs of writing, what can be achieved? Why keep plugging away in your journal or diary that no one will ever read? Every person who writes has a reason. But first, "Begin with the desire to speak into silence, begin from

We come to life changing trials in our life, some may be a path that we are glad we did while others wished that we can go back and choose the other because of a negative result. The most vivid memory I have of writing is back in the tenth grade. I had the best teacher ever in regards to writing. I used to view writing as a senseless waste of time. Writing, in my opinion, at the time was always noted to be formal and boring; however, my tenth grade English teacher, Mrs. Perez, changed my whole perception of writing and how it affects humanity. One day after class she pulled me aside and recommended a book known as, “His Dark Materials,” which is about a young girl who, with her allies, fought for the discovery of a dark substance called the “Dust.” The book single handedly altered my mental picture of writing and creativity. Writing can be about anything in the universe, and the possibilities are endless. The main point, however, which ties everything together, is imagination. One’s imagination can truly be defined as infinite to the power of infinite, because it contains numerous amounts of details and features on life and the world itself. How does this tie to writing one may ask. Well an elaborate imagination helps to create an elaborate piece of writing. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.”…

The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…

When you were younger did you ever take a minute to think about how you started to read and write? What made you decide to pick up that pen or pencil and just jot down your feelings, your surroundings? Perhaps it was for school because you were "made" to write and read for the class or reading and writing were in your nature. However reading and writing for some people were never easy: they took motivation, dedication, being independent and possibly even teaching themselves. Fredrick Douglass and Malcom X are classic examples of famous writers who struggled with both reading and writing. I would like to focus on one of the main reasons for their success, which was being self-motivated, which is a key element.…

Writers use what they know to make their work into something that can be treasured for years. They share what they know, they paint pictures with their words that allow their readers to get a glimpse of their lives and in some cases they use what is going on around them to share what they are feeling, or what they are not feeling. In some cases the writers use other pieces of literature or other people’s ideas to get their point across.…

The only difference is in football there is a whole team while in writing there's just a quarterback. Just like how there are several things that can influence a quarterback before making a play there are things that influence a writer before writing. Factors such as personal experiences, time period, location, socioeconomic status, and values influence a writer but, other than that there is one more thing that influences a writer. That's the audience the writer targets. Like all the other factors this plays a critical role because the writer wants to impress the audience he can do so by increasing his/her awareness towards the audience. The author writes based on the knowledge, attitude, and needs of the audience and doing so will help the audience relate to themselves make connections with the writer. For example, if I have to write an essay that college professors will review, My essay would have vocabulary words, citations, and anything that is university related. It's not just writing, being aware of others can even make one's life…

In the poem “To This Day” by Shane Koyczan he shows that people that get bullied constantly aren’t able to blow stuff off as easy as others. In the poem he shows that some people need motivation and help. He shows this by stating in the poem,”We are not abandoned cars stalled out… and if in some way we are don’t worry we only got out to walk and get gas”. Gas could symbolize getting help from someone they know and trust, or could be trying to get help with therapy or things of that nature. Another meaning could be that they need to get motivation to keep going from something. The dark background colors could mean that they need better things to happen to get motivation from.…

By this, I mean that there are not to restrain their thoughts, motives, and insight from the world. There is no “comfort zone”, whatever walls that may exist they tear them down. Whatever barrier that may stand between the human heart and the world, it is there duty to break through that barrier. That’s how strong their voice has to be, loud enough for the heart to hear, and strong enough for the soul to relate. How can they do either of those things by practicing restraint, or keeping themselves below standards so they will not cross the line. True writers do not see a line to cross, and if they do, they make it their mission to cross it. Writers can be outrageous, they can be eccentric. If they were to set limits for themselves, then they would not be able to relate to their audience. For example, Dave Berry is a writer that has no limits. He is not scared to say what needs to be said, and do it in any manner he pleases. He uses sarcasm and humor to reach his audience. In his piece, “Road Warrior”, he discusses three rages, Road Rage, Parking Lot Rage, and Shopping Cart Rage. He defies all limits and freely discusses the common frustrations of every day Americans. Like in the following quote, people are definitely frightened to speak like this, but Berry is not, because he knows in order to relate to people you cannot allow yourself to conform to the common…

This can be shown through the fact that writers are always one best seller away from completely changing their life for the better. Because there is no set path for writers to follow, they always have the hope of a piece of literature becoming a success. Also due to the lack of structure, they have many more unconventional opportunities to create literature, through blogs, books, novels, magazines, etc. And with each new opportunity, the writer is able to have much more hope, which fuels his positivity to conquer the negatives within his lifestyle. All in all, the freedom a writer experiences overtakes his negatives by excusing his life from complete structure, thus giving him constant hope, as well…

I feel that the author is trying to speak for an extremely large group of people and not just the father that is mentioned in the story. I believe that he is intending to convey that there are so many people in this world that work extremely hard and don't get any notice or thanks for their time and struggles. I feel as if this really relates to the generation that I live in today. In my generation, more than my parents and theirs, I feel that kids aren't really appreciative of their parents and many other people that do a favor for them. It's almost as if they believe that the world revolves around them, they are entitled to everything, and that everything should be perfectly prepared just for them. In this story, it says that he, "with cracked…

Writing varies from a text message to a novel. Writers often have a difficult task in creating a piece of work that truly identifies the meaning of good writing. Every good writer usually starts with the basics such as genre, audience, rhetorical situation, and reflection of the piece. Throughout this semester, we have gone through all of these key terms in great detail with each new assignment that has come our way. In doing this, not only as students but also as writers, we have come to create our own theory of writing. Every writer has a different theory of writing though most are very similar. Now, at this point in the semester after doing countless journals, in-class exercises, and final assignments, I think I have figured out my own theory of writing.…
