For this week’s assignment we are asked to analyze one of the literary works from this week’s readings and explain why the literary work captured my interest, using terms and concepts from the text as support, describe one of the analytical approaches outlined chapter 16, using details from the text to support interpretations, and evaluate the meaning of the selected literary work, using analytical approach described. Consequently, “the task in literary criticism requires you to move beyond your personal feelings and examine the work itself in order to discover its significance” (Clugston, 2010). Therefore, the approach used to critique the genre was the formalist approach. According to our text, the formalist approach is the style used most in literary criticism. Specifically, the style of criticism aims to focus on the form and development of the literary genre. (Clugston, 2010). Furthermore, “… The formalist critic identifies literary tools and techniques that the writer chooses and shows how they are used to make the intent of the writer and the significance of the literary work evident” (Clugston, 2010). Tone can portray a variety of emotions ranging from solemn, grave, and critical to witty, wry and humorous. (Literary-Devices.com, 2010).
Specific language like the use of the word “daggers” when Jeanne says; “…And have you looking daggers at me all the time!” (Clugston, 2010). And when Henri makes comments like: “You 're a stubborn little minx!” (Clugston, 2010) seem to set the tone as if this couple really has disdain for one another. However, this is where the contrast comes in, for in my opinion the theme of the story is that this couple really does care very much for one another but have an old style way of showing their true feelings. To conclude, the formalist approach provides a method to analyze different genres of literature by asking questions about the setting, plot, and whether or not surprised occurred. Moreover, observing the characters and the language used, we can determine the theme of the story. Therefore, it has been the purpose of this paper to analyze “I’m Going! A Comedy in One Act” using the formalist
