IUPUI Day Of Caring
Upon being assigned a Cultural & Service event with a paper I really wanted to both pick something I had never done before but, also gain a worthwhile experience. Since being at IUPUI I have not done much community service mostly because I don't think I realized how many actual opportunities that I would actually enjoy doing where there. I also did not realize the massive amount of cultural events that there are on campus in a variety of capacities from cultural talks to immersion experiences for non-international students. It was almost hard to choose where to get involved thus, I attended more then two events however, IUPUI Day of Caring and ACRIEMA were the most impactful.

Firstly, it sets a fantastic example of what as students and people in a loving community should do, which is to give back and help those that needs it. Service should be a priority in everyone’s lives because everyone including ourselves benefit from some form of service every single day. Mentoring is definitely a form of service. I am giving my time to help other students with their first year college experience just as someone helped me. I am doing both because I enjoy doing it but it impacts the community here at IUPUI. It makes people feel more included, it helps people be successful, and it gives students the push to serve themselves. I think a good perspective for this was another volunteer event that I participated in called Fall Fest. There I had the opportunity to talk to potential Women in Science Students about why I love IUPUI and what makes it the best place for a woman science major. The topic mentioned over and over was the resources, the experiences, the opportunities, and of course the mentoring. Every single one of the ladies present representing IUPUI mentioned a mentoring experience and how it has both impacted their education, career choice, and personal lives. Mentoring is a service because you both gain from it and give to the

During my high school years approximately around my sophomore/ junior year my basketball team including I myself attended the Hoops for Haiti fundraiser that Meredith Elementary school hosted. Hoops for Haiti helps aid the disaster relief fund that is held in Haiti. Hundreds of elementary school children paid $5 each for a chance to play with not only Neumann-Goretti’s women’s basketball team but also the men’s team too. All proceeds were meant to go directly to rebuild and fund schools in Haiti. I decided to talk about this specific service that I participated in because not only was it fun but I got to interact with kids younger than me and was able to put smiles on their faces, those who were there and hopefully those in Haiti knowing that they do have people who care and want to help them out in every way possible.…

Adams Center, Delta Sigma Theta, and Kappa Alpha put on the event on April 28th at the bottom of Adams Center from 6-8pm. The event was open to anyone, and the primary audience was black students and most took place in some aspect of the event, which is really cool. Everyone at the event was quite inviting and made the event enjoyable for me. They started with food that loosely aligned with black culture: gumbo, fried chicken, rice, green beans, mac and cheese, watermelon, and Kool-Aid and punch. It was delicious, and they didn’t run out of food early. The first presentation was a poetry slam about police brutality especially to black individuals. There was also a PowerPoint on repeat that displayed many statistics and facts about the…

In high school, I joined Zonta Club to be involved with school and community. Zonta Club gave me an opportunity to reach out to people that had helped others and inspired other students to do the same. One of the unforgettable moments was when I volunteered in a fundraiser to help Alzheimer's disease. It was an event, called Rock-a-Thon, where kids and adults were together to raise awareness those who had the disease. Everyone was participating in the activities that were available in the event. There were games that both kids and elders could play with. They showed stories about the importance of being aware and helping those with Alzheimer’s disease. The event had shaped my views on giving back to the community. Service was not only about giving back, but it is also about learning from others. The joy that the people had even when there was a sickness in their life was incredible. It made me realize how I was fortunate to be living a life without the disease. The fundraiser had made me learn about the people in my town and the obstacles that had to endure and were still enduring. The event had impact the involvement and the appreciation I have over the…

Politically speaking, mentoring truly matters in nursing because the relationship that is created between the new graduates with their mentors provides positive feedback and is indeed a great investment in the health care. On the long run, confident nurses improve the overall health outcome of the system as a whole as well as patients' health, which naturally leads to reduction of fiscal spending on patient's readmission into hospitals and less occurrence of medical errors.…

For my cultural event I choose to go to the African-American Poetry Night hosted by MCCC writing center. I found the event insightful as it highlighted well know African-American poets such as Mayo Angelou and Langston Hughes, and some poets that are not as well known, such as Marvin X. The event was open to the public, and the attendees was welcome to bring a poem or a story to share.…

The cultural event that I attended was Matador Nights and it was this past Friday, September 15th from 9 p.m. - 1 a.m. It was held at the University Student Union and it was free to all CSUN students with a valid student photo ID. No guests were allowed for entry and the also ticket does not guarantee admission to the event, therefore, many students, including myself, arrived early to be permitted inside. Matador Nights provided games and activities such as, laser tag, carnival rides, an oxygen bar, virtual reality games, music, a photo booth, tarot card readings, and free food. This event was a way for students to take a break from their studies and have fun with their friends. Ever since school began, students were passing out fliers informing…

I believe one of the main roles of a mentor is to help and advise a mentee, to understand and learn how to control their own emotions and feelings. I also feel that the mentor can be, when required, a good role model and by using his own experiences, he can guide and motivate the mentee to cope with all the stresses and strains of adolescence. Another part of their role is to improve the mentee’s confidence, self-esteem and hopefully be a calming influence over them, as well as support them to show moral courage and in time try to understand and get on with their peers, adults and show restraint when they feel aggravated or frustrated.…

I spent multiple summers volunteering at St. Vincent's Healthcare. This opportunity was important to me because this was my first opportunity to delve into the experience of medicine. Throughout this process, I was able to help many people, as well as gain an overall understanding of how the hospital community works on a daily basis. I worked in a different branch of the hospital each year, however the entire experience was special. This opportunity was something that I really appreciate because of the experience and the enjoyment I had getting to help people become well again. Ultimately, this experience was positive and reinforced the idea of wanting to become a doctor. Essentially, this opportunity was the meaningful because it provided…

Octoberfest met the need of giving these kids a safe place to come and trick or treat and play games. It allowed them to go to a fun and entertaining event where they could wear their costumes and get tons of candy. My team certainly had an impact on the community by participating in this event. We gave these kids a place that they could come to and have a great time, and this made an impact on the community because my group’s participation helped make the event possible. This also made an impact on the community because the parent’s saw that this was a safe place they could bring their kids year after year for a night of fun, entertainment, and candy. The community saw that this is a great event to bring their kids to. This experience has affected the way I think about the community, its problems, and solutions to those problems by making me see that there are things and problems that exist in our community and no matter how big or how small I can make a difference. If I value my time, the outcome could be astronomical, every ripple has an…

Throughout the night, we would engage in conversation and establish new friendships with interesting and kind people. I was fascinated with hearing the stories told by the people we met. It undoubtedly changed my once uneducated perspective on often stigmatized individuals, realizing they were important humans too, as deserving of love and nurture as everyone is. Some were raised in unfortunate predicaments that denied them of their basic rights, whether it be poverty, domestic violence, or abuse; all horrible issues that I was so fortunate to not have had to deal with. Some found themselves struggling with drug addiction and alcoholism, until they were left with nothing. I was able to listen to their stories, letting them know I cared, and in return providing me with their wisdom and advice. By the end of each day with project HOPE, I was certain of two things: all lives were important and mattered, despite racial, economic, or ideological differences, and everyone deserved a friend to talk to and confide in. I am glad I could put any differences aside, and be a compassionate friend to whoever needed one. From this eye-opening experience, I believe I am a better person and more inclusive individual. To be the best person one can be, it is imperative to eliminate any biases and strive to help everyone in…
