Othello’s main downfall which is apparent towards the end when he seemingly removes himself from the situation and believes himself to be an executioner who is carrying out a public service. He believes that “she must die, else she betray more men” which suggests the audience that he does although he does not want to do what he is doing, he believes that it is to stop her from cuckolding others. Throughout we see Othello change, at the start of the play he is seen as there to calm the situation and to hear both sides of the story whereas towards the end of the play where he is quick to come to conclusions. We see this when he does not question Desdemona about what he has heard he just tells her to “think on thy sins” and that “Cassio has confessed” when Cassio has confessed to nothing in that regard. Othello also puts all of his trust into one person which is shown when Shakespeare has Othello kneel down in front of Iago to show that he has placed his trust in Iago. Although Iago did play a role in manipulating Othello it is in the end, Othello who carries out the act of killing Desdemona and committing suicide to contribute to the tragedy.
