Ice Road Truckers
Ice Road Truckers
Having a job that only goes on during a certain season has many downfalls, you won't have much to do in the summer, spring, and fall months. All winter you have to cram in getting as many trips as you can, and with global warming, the ice is melting and you soon will never be able to drive over the lake because it won't be the required 30 inches thick. Being an ice road trucker isn't a very reliable job, because you have to be many months away from your family and friends, you are isolated in your truck usually by yourself, it is very dangerous, and you have to drive ready to jump out in a emergency, because they are very common. If you make one little mistake on the road you are not only putting your own life in danger, you are putting every truck driver who is on the ice's life in danger. It is very cold in the north and if your truck breaks down which is not uncommon, you could get frostbite in a few minutes if the heating system stops working. if you have to go out of your seat and go fix a part on the truck it is very cold so you have to do it quick. Many things can and do go wrong on the road and you are stranded so there is nowhere you can stop to get help, it is a very independent job, meaning everything is on you. If you mess up in anyway and damage the equipment you are bringing, you will have to pay because that is your fault. It is a very stressful job and can be very risky.

Ice jams are formed when the blocks of ice formed along the river causing water retention behind the blocks of ice. Once the ice melts the water that was retained adds up to the water level already existing. to understand ice jams better the tree elevation scar of the eastern cottonwood tree was measured in the lock 8 in glenville, stockade park in schenectady and at the Glen sanders mansion in Scotia. A stadia rod and a vertical scale were used to measure the tree scars. There have been several Occupational groups that I have belonged to without even realizing it was a type of folklore. The latest group was a truck driver. It is like a rite of passage to hear a couple of “trucker” ghost stories as you embark on your new driving career. Another characteristic of folklore within the group is the “trucker lingo.” Some examples of this would be the following: Anteater which was a name given to a truck design that came out in the early 1990’s, Alligator which refers to the debris a big rig tire blowout leaves on the road-the tread resembles alligator skin, and Smokey Bear which got its origins from Smokey the Bear because State Police wear the same hat and term was even used in the movie Smokey and the Bandit referring…
