It is sometimes difficult for us to appreciate the importance of energy conservation. With this project entitled “Identifying energy saving opportunity in building and role of social awareness in reducing energy demand” we realize that simply by being more diligent in our use of energy in homes and offices, would have a significant impact on national energy requirements.
A penny saved is a penny earned. Reckless and unrestrained urbanization, with its haphazard buildings, has bulldozed over the valuable natural resources of energy, water, and ground cover, thereby greatly hampering the critical process of eco-friendly habitat development. However, it is not too late to retrace the steps. Rapidly increasing energy prices, concerns about resource depletion and climate change, have concentrated people’s minds on the role energy plays in our lives. Much of the effort is focused on securing sufficient supplies of electricity, oil, gas, etc, at affordable prices, but reducing energy demand at source can be better alternative.
India has limited energy reserves and therefore it will need to increase its energy efficiency, in addition to re-evaluating its existing building stock. Existing buildings offer one of the greatest potentials in contributing to energy conservation. Even a 10 percent reduction in energy use in home would have a significant impact on national energy requirements, and this could be achieved with little or no investment, simply by being more diligent in our use of energy in homes and offices.
The first step in an energy efficiency approach is to locate the place in the building where maximum energy is used. An energy audit will pinpoint those areas and identify the most effective measures for cutting the energy costs. It is estimated that buildings could save 10-15 percent on their energy bills by implementing energy efficient
