I amaried Mia for pushing through and choosing to stay with Adam and the rest of her extanded family and friends. You would need alot of couage to make a descion like that.“Love, it never dies. It never goes away, it never fades, so long as you hang on to it. Love can make you immortal” This quote by Mia is a very powerful quote and it sums up what she went through in one sentence. What I think she means by this is that love is such a powerful thing to her and as long as people love and support her she can go through with anything.

Another theme protaied in this text is being strong. Being strong is an imporent message to protaiy as many people in this generation we live in have to be strong in many situations wether it be a socail or gobel issue. In the novel it is shown by Mia always being different like in her family, they all love rock music, expept Mia who have a real passion for classical music. Also her boyfriend Adam is in a band and all of his friends our very different to her, and she struggles to fit in. “If I felt like a fish out of water in my family, I felt like a fish on Mars in Adam’s circle.” This quote shows Mias feelings towards the whole situation, it shows that she feels quiet sad about the situation due to she is so different to all the people she knows, it shows she’s strong because she over comes this socail issue on a daily

Set in the Australian summer of 1967, Michael Gow’s Away is an elaborate play which explores the ideas of self- discovery and change. Through the war affected nation, three families, each from different social classes, depart on an iconic Australian holiday to the beach. In the play, Gow utilises the characters to demonstrate that going away physically is intrinsically linked to their mental developments. With the help of references to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer night’s Dream, Away uses Gwen and Coral to show the significant psychological changes made by the characters during holidays to the coast. Tom throughout the play acts as a catalyst for the change in other characters and is associated with Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.…

The entire poem is written with a tone of sadness or depression. This evokes the senses of the reader by being able to sense how the girl is feeling and see how the words of others affect her. It can be pictured, this little girl who plays with the Barbie doll and it is just a toy, but to others it is the appearance that society wants and she soon realizes that when a fellow classmate hurts her with mean words. She can not go on with the fear that everyone sees her as imperfect or flawed, so in the end she gives up on trying and eventually gives up on herself. A simile in the poem, “Her good nature wore out/like a fan belt,” the message here is that she has given up on everything.…

Selina rejects the scholarship awarded by the Association as a firm declaration of the digressive course she intends to take, because it means to her “something I don’t want for myself…” (262). Through reconciliation with her ethnic community, her divided self achieves integration. Her search for her purpose in life is over. She doesn’t want to be a part of her community, yet she has internalized the community within herself. Thus, even though she had resisted ethnic communalism in the beginning, she embraces the principal credo of Marcus Garvey-- of “return to one’s roots”, as her purpose in life. Initially opposed to her mother’s fierce competitiveness, she finally realizes the same ruthless determination and purposefulness charge both their lives. She has come to know who she is, and what she wants, because she has come to know where she comes from and what her roots are. Thus her quest towards wholeness begins by journeying to her roots, her origins, her heritage. However her journey towards fulfillment should occur without the support and solidarity of her immediate family and community. Like Tom Wingfield of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie and Tennyson’s Ulysses, Selina chooses the inevitable course of desertion and alienation from her own people in order to fulfill her commitment towards self-realisation. She says,“…in making your way you always hurt someone” (265). Her symbolic act of throwing away one of her silver bangles “she had always worn” (268) is an attestation of the fact that severance from the encumbrances of an old life is necessary to begin a new one. After her rejection of the scholarship awarded to her she…
