This I believe: We all have a choice.
The saying goes “If life hands you lemons, make lemonade” in addition to that, I have also heard “If life hands you Lemons, throw them back and do you own thing!” two very different outcomes of the same situation. For most of my life other people’s choices really bothered me. I’ve never been one to think I know more than anyone else, but it’s easy to see when they aren’t making the best choices or using all the options that are available to them. Most people say, “that’s extremely insensitive of you to say that”, or “they can’t control it” but concerning depression for example, yes, they don’t control whether they are depressed or not, but do

We have opinions and interests but are too afraid to be different from someone else. On my mission I had a companion who taught me a very important lesson, we wanted to get dinner and so he asked me what I wanted. I replied with “I don’t care, I can eat anything.” He got mad at me he threw his hands up in the air and said, “why do I keep getting companions that won’t make any decisions!” I was surprised by his outburst and quickly decided, but that small interaction has made a profound impact in my life. It’s easier to let someone else decide, the oxford dictionary definition of herd mentality is “The tendency for people's behavior or beliefs to conform to those of the group to which they belong.” Our decision to follow or to lead is exactly that its ours to make, we can’t allow ourselves to become unopinionated, if you can think of major event that has impacted the world that wasn’t because to groups had different opinions I would be really impressed! Our country was founded because men and women were brave enough to make a decision that was different than that of their king, they became their own kings and …show more content…
Are we to take the “bull by the horns “and control our lives or be fiddle-footed in our minds and actions, never having a clear objective or course?
I am still learning how to make decisions, it’s a trial and error system, but that is why this key ability is one of the many important principles we live by. When it comes to politics or it come to the gospel we all have choices to make that will point us in the direction we want to go. I was once taught “direction then velocity” when you’re throwing a ball you can’t just throw it out there and then pick the direction you want it to go, you must pick a direction and then throw it. Making decision is a big part of growing and learning, we need to be brave enough to take whatever lemon life throws at us and look at it for a minute a decide what will we do with this

What is the influence of other group member's opinions on the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of an individual. What if we are not sure how to act in a certain situation. As stated in the text "we know other people conform, we underestimate the extent to which we can be induced to follow the group" (Aronson, p.23,2012). Groups have influence on ambiguous and unambiguous situations. In an individualistic culture, such as that of the US, conformity connotes something negative. However as a society we still need to master the world, and be connect by others. Thus people conform to the opinion of other group members and yield to social norms. As stated by Aronson,…

David Icke, an author, conspiracy theorist, and former football player and sportscaster once said “The human race is a herd. Here we are, unique, eternal aspects of consciousness with an infinity of potential, and we have allowed ourselves to become an unthinking, unquestioning blob of conformity and uniformity. A herd. Once we concede to the herd mentality, we can be controlled and directed by a tiny few. And we are.” Here, Icke is saying that humans often become attached to groups. They do not tend to question what is going on, as long as they feel safe and secure with any group. Humans thrive on the feeling of being included, so much so that they lose themselves and start to become one with their group. They become numb to new ideas different…

Our choices come from out own opinions, but our opinons come from our parents, guardians and other people in society or just straight from within ourselves. When we area young are parents, guardains tell us and teach us what is wright and wrong. So when it is time for us to make a choice we remember what are parents had told us, and feel we must think the same as them so are choice refects upons them. The Israel-Palestinian conflict has been a major source of communal tension amongst Arabs and Jews in the last century. Disagreements over whom the land rightfully belongs to have erupted in violence, resulting in the deaths of thousands of civilians and fighters. This fierce fighting has led to public outcry for the two factions to come to a peaceful solution that will once again bring stability to the region. Sandy Tolan, author of The Lemon Tree: An Arab, A Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East presents the conflict through the true histories of two families, antithetical in nature, whose pasts ultimately lead them down a road of friendship. Despite a few exaggerations and assumptions, Tolan presents a well-researched, impartial history…

Anthony Robbins once said “It’s in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.” People make so many quick decisions unconsciously, whereas other decisions are lamented over. Society makes choices and creates opinions through deep mental thought which is influenced by preference, logic, feelings, and reflection. Some people may even question whether free will is a believable concept. Others believe it is all within our own power to make decisions that will lead to greater happiness. Little decisions lead to big consequences because when small and simple decisions are made, big decisions are to come, choices indicate character, and every decision made impacts other decisions.…

People decide to do everything, they choose which path to take, and choose the consequences or rewards associated with their decisions. Surprisingly many do not know “when you have a decision to make, the standard advice is to think everything through and weigh the pros and cons and reason your way to the right choice.” Many people just react without thinking, it is human nature to follow the impulses felt, but no one ever stops to think what bad things may occur from their idiotic choices. Especially in today’s society, every single decision made can lead to a person’s destruction or even death, the free will humans posses is something of use for good but many abuse it and end up hurting their fate more than helping…

A British prime minister, Benjamin Disraeli has stated “Circumstances are beyond the control of man, but his conduct is in his own power.” This quote is valid as Disraeli teaches us that we should concern ourselves with how we should react to situations and events we encounter, even though we can't predict the future. Ultimately, this is all we are in control of and responsible for. I concur with this quote, as we can't control what happens, but we have the power to make decisions for ourselves. The Stranger by Albert Camus and The Crucible by Arthur Miller are two great pieces of literature that strongly reflect this quote. The protagonists in both stories are presented with several options to choose from, yet the outcome is out of their control.…

Each person in society is individual, but they operate as a group. In a lecture from 1985, Doris Lessings stated the human nature wanted to be part of a group. Being in a group made it inevitable that people would compromise their beliefs for the accepted beliefs. Everyone possessed opinions but the difference was how far, how long and how hard they would go to keep their opinions. In her lecture, she accurately described an embarrassing moment of “how often [people] said black was white because other people were saying it” (Lessings).…

    Conformity and Obedience

Most people like to feel that they make their own decisions, but in reality they are often just ‘conforming’ by adjusting their actions, attitudes or opinions so that they fit in with those of other people, or just simply to ‘go with the flow’. This happens as a result of real or imagined group pressure (Myers) in (Cardwell 2001), and may result in a change in beliefs or behaviour. Nobody tells you to conform, and you may not even realise you are doing it as it is implied or implicit. Throughout the course of our lives we become associated with or attached to groups which will each have its own responses expected of it. As a bus passenger you are expected to behave in a certain way, although your attitude may not be as important. As a football fan your attitude towards your team is important where as your behaviour may not be as important. As a parent the attitudes towards your children are supposed to include encouragement and you expected to demonstrate protective and helpful behaviour. It can be found to say that recognising and acting within the pro-social norms of a group may be seen as a desirable act, whereas unthinking conformity to a…

In the book Mistakes Were Made (But Not By Me) by Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson analyses, explains, and elaborates the two essential and necessary aspects of making any decision. "The need to reduce dissonance is a universal mental mechanism, but that doesn't mean we are doomed to be controlled by it. Human beings may not be eager to change, but we have the ability to change, and the fact that many of our self-protective delusions and blind spots are built into the way the brain works is no justification for not trying... An appreciation of how dissonance works, in ourselves and others, gives us some ways to override our wiring. And protect us from those who can't." ( 222-223). Cognitive dissonance explains why we eat the leftover cake when…
