Piggy Book by Anthony Browne is a picture book that explores many different concepts. There are many themes throughout piggy book such as gender stereotyping. Respect and responsibility. This narrative shows how Mrs Piggott works very hard to keep this family running and the three boys have nothing to contribute to her hard work and just lie around all day long
The first theme Browne used in Piggy book was gender stereotyping can be limiting on one’s identity which forces people in to roles they are not happy about. In opening 24 of piggy book the mother is happily mending the car wearing old overalls. The humour in this opening is in the word choice of quote ‘Mending’ which breaks the gender stereotype because this is usually the fathers job. Another example in piggy book that clearly demonstrates gender stereotyping is in Opening 21 when Patrick and Simon are making their beds and the fathers is ironing the lack of framing around the illustration shows that the boys that the boys are not being forced to do their daily chores but are doing them by choice.
Respect has a big role in piggy book as the mother was taken for granted in result of low self-esteem and cause the family to break down. The boys in their house showed no respect towards Mrs Piggott and disrespected her. Opening 2 the boys are sitting at the dining table calling on Mrs Piggott to make their breakfast. The open mouth motifs demonstrate the boys have minimal respect for her except whenever they need her. The dark colours in opening 17, when the boys are looking for scraps in the living room, help portray the disrespect they gave Mrs Piggott when she worked, cleaned and cooked for them. The colours show how they have fallen apart and are not able to live without Mrs Piggott. After the boys apologised their respect changed dramatically and they showed that they are capable of doing house hold chores and still do the same activities they were doing before.
