The production and sale of cigarettes should be made illegal. Cigarettes cause cancer. They are bad for your lungs, and also they are bad for your teeth and mouth. If the production and sale of cigarettes was made illegal, it would help cigarette addicts stop the bad habit. The death rate of smoking would also decrease.
Smoking causes cancer. “Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women in the United States” (cancer.gov) and 90 percent of lung cancer deaths among men and almost 80 percent of lung cancer deaths among women are because of smoking. Smoking causes several other types of cancer, including cancers of the throat, mouth, nasal cavity, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, kidney, bladder, and cervix, and acute myeloid leukemia. “Among the 250 known harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 69 can cause cancer.”(cancer.gov) Smoking is bad for your lungs. Smoke contains several toxins which cause your lungs to slowly die. Smoker’s lungs are also contaminated by the tar that comes from cigars and cigarettes. “This tar gets stuck in the bronchial tubes thus causing them to get clogged. The lungs, however, try to rid the bronchial tubes of tar by stimulating coughs, although nicotine is the main problem.”(smokerslungs.org) Each cigarette that a person smokes damages your lungs and causes tar buildup. Smoking causes death. The health effects from smoking cause about 443,000 deaths, or one of every five deaths, each year in the United States. “More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined.” (cdc.gov) Smoking is the primary cause of untimely, avoidable death in this country. These three reasons are why the production and sale of cigarettes should be illegal. Illegalizing the production and sale of cigarettes would dramatically reduce the amount of deaths in America. Also, it would protect non-smokers from secondhand smoke. “Smoking causes nothing but sickness, death, bad teeth, addiction, and a waste of money.”(wordpress.com)
