Illiteracy In Adult Education
For Freire illiteracy is an obstacle to mental progress and the creation of liberal mentality. He believes that qualitative and quantitative education is substantive to democratization of culture and to the development of the country. However, since there were about twenty million children, teenagers and adults illiterate in Brazil in 1964, therefore the country was suffering
In general, people do not want conflicts and to prevent such from happening, the minority in the society just gives way by letting themselves be conformed to the dictates of the society. They have already assumed powerlessness, lacking education, to be heard by the people in authority airing their valuable contributions to effect such meaningful changes that they desire

Here Freire changed the atmosphere of rendering students quality learning experience through the following: First, He employed classroom coordinators that serve to organize an eye-opener learning activity that meets and satisfies the needs of the students— intellectual, emotional and moral—and that surfaces evocative information. Here he engaged the students in a meaningful interpersonal, interactive classroom discussion that clarifies situations or promote an action from that clarification, instead of learning from the passive teachers that forces students to absorb their educational reality. Second, he purposely created reality discussion topics that are centered on the prevailing life situation of the people and the condition within their country. This active exercise has permitted the people to figure out and to comprehend their participation in the problems their society is facing, instead of learning from lectures that only provides an imaginative theory of the truth for the students. Third, he lets the students feel that they are valued participants and not students that have to that have to submit to every instruction they receive to accomplish. in addition, He said that in certainty man’s relation to reality is expressed as a subject to an object, resulting in knowledge which man could express in language.(pp.43) The idea is simple and intelligible for humans to clearly perceive the data of reality and the more human precisely seize true causality, the more critical their understanding of reality going to be. The modes of consciousness are identified as follows: First, “Naïve consciousness” apprehends causality as inactive, established fact and thus is deceived in its perception. While “Critical consciousness” represents things and facts as they are practically experienced, in their causal and circumstantial correlations, “Naïve consciousness” controls facts, and thus is free to understand reality as it pleases. Second, “Critical consciousness” works functionally together with reality; “Naïve consciousness” overlaps on reality. Third, “Magic consciousness,” in contrast, is simply absorbing facts. It leads people to full submission to the power of facts; However “Fanatical consciousness” is a pathological naivety that brings people in adapting reality in an irrational manner. Comprehension and awareness corresponds to a certain action.

    Freire describes the “banking” concept of education by saying that “Education thus becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor. Instead of communicating, the teacher issues communiqués and makes deposits which the students patiently receive, memorize, and repeat” (Freire 244). He uses the metaphor of depositor and depositories to relate to a bank. The organized mindlessness of business between a bank and its contents is portrayed as the style of teaching which is seen as ineffective. It is seen in his eyes as unfavorable because the student does not have an opportunity to form his/her own ideas and think critically. On the other hand, Freire proposes the problem-posing style of education. He explains how power and authority are both mutual between the student and the teacher when he says, “The teacher is no longer merely the-one-who-teaches, but one who is himself taught in dialogue with the students, who in turn while being taught also teach” (249). Freire stresses the importance of problems for the mind in order for critical thinking to take place. Because of the mind is at work, people are able to form their own opinions and ideas instead of just storing information and accepting it.     Freire believes that "Education is suffering from narration sickness" (1). He believes that students are being filled with just words and not with significant content. He says, "narration leads the students to memorize mechanically the narrated content. Worse yet, it turns them into containers, into receptacles to be filled"(Freire 1). Narration education is to make the teacher better not to help the students learn. The more humble and open a student is the better the student they are. Freire feels that the banking concept of education is, "in which the scope of action allowed to the students extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits" (1). Knowledge should be thought of as a gift for those who will embrace themselves as being knowledgeable.     Over 90 million American adults, nearly one out of two, are functionally illiterate, meaning that they do not possess the minimum skills required to function in a modern society. Facts such as this regarding literacy illustrate a devastating portrait of the social conditions which exist in America, the country generally portrayed as the most advanced in the world. Out of 191 million adults in the US, as many as 44 million cannot read a newspaper or fill out a job application; another 50 million are unable to read or comprehend above the eighth grade level. According to education experts it requires ninth grade competence to understand the instructions for an antidote on a bottle of corrosive kitchen lye, tenth grade competence to understand the instructions on a federal income tax return, and twelfth grade competence to read a life insurance form. Unfortunately, more than three fifths of the population is unable to read with the competence of a fifth grader. Steps to resolve this problem must be taken immediately. Educational improvements need to be made at the most basic level, in the country’s grammar and elementary schools. For, it has been proven that supplying children between the ages of five and ten years of age with numerous books both in and outside of school lends itself to the overall quality of education children receive and increases the children’s chances of functional literacy by nearly 35%. Unfortunately, many grade schools in the urban regions of America are not well supplied with information on grants which may provide them with additional funding so that they may properly equip children with such materials.
