In the 90’s Urban Denim made jeans a fashion garment by developing a men’s fall collection that eluded the idea of jeans no longer being about “western cowboys and country”. However, with so much freedom on the Internet and an increase in fashion blog sites, the opposite can occur. Thus, Gaimster suggests the more recent reality of “trickle-up theory”, in which trends are started on the streets among lower socioeconomic groups and subcultures—such as bloggers, or anyone who has access to a camera and the Internet. These trends are “spotted and used by designers for inspiration, finding their way onto the catwalks and then into the upper classes of society” (Gaimster 110). With a somewhat ambiguous understanding between whether the elite or the lower class and subcultures inspire new trends, “we can agree that some styles develop in one or more sections of society and the cross over into others (trickle-across theory)” (Gaimster 110). Essentially, the different ways in which a symbol or logo, such as the skull, is incorporated into an outfit may vary according to social group or geographic…
In ariticale “All Clothing Is Costume” Laia Carcia (2015) argues that with the development of high fashion growth the line between clothing and costume is blurred and we all wear costume every day. If these clothes can dress as a profession for Halloween, the every-day wear counts as a costume. In a word, the author think the clothing is costume.…

New York is the world's largest city of fashion in the present day, but this relationship is only one that has been established in the last century or so. Paris was the centre of fashion since fashion's beginning, but throughout fashion's history, America has come out as the present leader in fashion. Fashion has evolved into something that is no longer dictated by high society, but accessible by all people. Many things have influenced the way American women's fashion has panned out over the centuries, whether it is belief systems of the time, or major events in history. It is a process that can be followed and observed giving answers to why and how fashion has evolved over time. Today, America and its women have helped fashion develop into a force in which anonymous everyday citizens decide what is popular and fashionable.…

Intimate Apparel was directed by Janice Capuana. She is an adjunct assistant prof. of Theatre at York College. The play takes place on the lower east side of New York City in 1905. The story revolves around Esther, a lonely African American seamstress living in a boarding house for single women run by Mrs. Dickson. Esther spends her days and nights sewing beautiful lingerie and corsets for New York’s high society ladies and ladies of the night. The only pleasure Esther finds in her lovely life is in the stories about the exotic fabrics she buys from Mr. Marks, her Orthodox Jewish supplier. These brief encounters and her dreams of one day opening a beauty salon of her own are what sustain her until one day when she receives a letter from George, a Barbarian worker on the Panama Canal. George wants to correspond with her, and though Esther is illiterate, one of her wealthy white customers, Mrs. Van Buren, convinces her that she will write for her. Eventually George comes to New York and the two marry, but it is hardly the happy union Esther had hoped for. The writer remarks on issues of race and sexual orientation, additionally on the battle not to abandon our fantasies.…

As I walked around the mall, I noticed the short shorts and baggy shirts that consume today’s women’s fashion. Leaving, I imagined the mall back in the 1950’s. The bright colored outfits reminded me of today’s. Even though both the 1950’s women fashion and 2016’s women fashion are bold in style, there are many similarities and differences in the two year’s fashion senses and their impressions on America’s fashion industry.…
Clothing in East-West is a failure of forced assimilation. Clothes serve a purpose to discriminate between foreign and domestic. When Marie arrives in Russia, she wears colorful western clothes, making it noticeable that she is a foreigner. To integrate herself into Soviet society, Marie leaves behind her Western style of clothing and adopts the Soviet style. The Soviets tend to wear dark and dull colors, which differs from her colorful French clothing. Marie has not truly assimilated to Soviet culture. Although she may dress like the rest of society, culture and linguistics impede her from fully assimilating. This scene shows the moment before Marie escapes to the French embassy. Marie wears French shoes and Soviet stockings that grabs the…
