I'm A Mitvah is a short dark comedy film about a man who goes to Mexico with his friend, where his friend unexpectedly passes away. The film is written and directed by Ben Berman.
In the beginning of the film, David, the main character finds himself in Mexico with his friends body. Because they are Jewish, David decides to bring the body home because the funeral home in Mexico wanted to embalm the body. So he embarks on his journey home, but soon finds out that his flight has been cancelled. In this scene, we see David stressed out about missing his flight while he is in contact with his deceased friend's mother. This scene shows the audience how he is expected to take care of many things as well as his grief. His friend's mother is reliant on him to return the body home and to comfort her during her grief. David takes on all of this responsibility, and does not show its effects until certain points of the film.
The film is comedic, and includes scenes of David bringing his friend's body back to his hotel in a giant cardboard box. David puts the box on its own bed as if it were a person. There he meets a girl that he connects with. This scene is a particularly important one in the film. This is the climax of David's grief, but the arrival of this woman helps him in a certain way. The scene starts with two people running off away from David on a beach while David is dragging his friend's box behind him. This shows that while David is focused on the death of his friend and his grief, he does need the attention and care of other
