Summerland Chapter 1 Summary
This week’s episodes starts off like the past two episodes, with several out of sequence scenes and flashbacks. Some of these sequences include David’s childhood, Melanie Bird being told a story, and Amy being tortured with leeches by Division 3.
The opening sequence of this episode also gives us a better look at Summerland. There are sleeping rooms and locker rooms for young mutants to use. We also get a few more details about the school and how it functions.

David is now in the woods again as himself, Bird, and Ptonomy prepare for another session of memory work. As always, Sydney is in the room watching David and comforting him as he travels to fearsome memories of his past. Today, Bird, Ptonomy, and David are visiting David’s kitchen

Bird fears that they will be ready to kill or follow David next time he does that. To gain Sydney and David’s trust, Bird then tells the story about Summerland. Summerland used to be a horse ranch that was inherited by Bird’s husband in the 40’s. Then Bird’s husband went looking for young mutants to fill Summerland with. He came across Cary and Walter, aka the Eye. However, Bird’s husband discovered that Walter didn’t want to help mutants, but hurt them. Bird reveals that she want to help David so he can be healthy and happy, but she also wants to use him to win the war against Division 3. However, Bird is having trouble helping David because his brain is blocking memories. In order to lower his brain’s defenses, Bird decides to sedate him during their next memory work session. Sydney wants to join Ptonomy, David, and Bird during memory work, but David is uncomfortable with it. David says that he doesn’t want Sydney to see inside his head because he is afraid she won’t feel the same about him afterwards. David tells Sydney that he loves her and Sydney says if he loves her and she loves him, then that is all that maters. David then says something very interesting: he says that everyone in Summerland is saying that he is sane, but questions if they are right about

He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. The seasonal shift from winter to summer represents the boys’ fall into maturity, proving the theme that the loss of innocence is painful and unavoidable. While introducing the Devon School, Gene explains early on that "During the winter[,] most of [the dormitory Masters] regard anything unexpected in a student with suspicion...[but on] clear June days...they appear to uncoil...[and] a streak of tolerance is detectable" (Knowles 23). The Devon School, one of the most flourishing and strict boarding schools in New Hampshire, takes boys and toughens them into men using a rigorous lifestyle. In the summer, however, the teachers let the boys skip meals and ditch school. Gene suspects that the Devon faculty lessens their grip over the boys because he and the other Lower Middlers, two ranks below the seniors, remind the teachers of youthful peace. Therefore, the students’ summer session symbolizes a naïve phase in their lives before they reach the vast confusions and troubles of adulthood. However, when Gene’s dormitory Master, Mr.Ludsbury, returns to the school, Mr.Ludsbury chides Gene, lecturing that “everything went straight to seed during the summer” and he declares that he will “put… the dormitory back together”(Knowles 81). With the inescapable coming of winter, order returns to…

Wright, formerly Minnie Foster, used to sing before she married. After her marriage, she got a bird that sings. Mr. Wright, having already “killed” one form of singing, proceeds to do so with yet another form, the bird (paragraph 244). The bird is a reflection of Mrs. Wright’s pre-marriage personality, and when killed, it is essentially killing Minnie Foster again. The two women become sympathetic toward Mrs. Wright, backing up the desire to withhold the evidence of the dead bird. Meanwhile, the men are searching for evidence of motive, in order to convict Mrs. Wright. While the women are gathering belongings to take to Mrs. Wright, they discover an unfinished quilt that has some stitching that is out of place; Mrs. Hale decides that it would make Mrs. Wright happy if she fixed the stitching for her. The women also discover that Mr. Wright was murdered in the same fashion that the bird was killed. Mrs. Petersrecalls when her kitten was killed right in front of her, and remembers that she had wanted to “hurt” the person responsible, however, she was being held back. At that, she understands the emotions controlling Mrs. Wright and becomes more sympathetic to…

I was first attracted by this book for its brief introduction----“A graphic, sensuous and surprising novel about the aftermath of Tiananmen Square----by a young woman who was there.” It is also said that this book was published in Taiwan in 1992; though banned in the inland of China, it circulated there. Wingfield, the absent father of Tom and Laura and husband to the shrewish Amanda, is referred to often throughout the story. Mr. Wingfield is the ultimate symbol of escape; this is because he has managed to remove himself from the desperate situation that the rest of his family is still living in. His picture is featured prominently on the wall as a constant reminder of better times and days gone by. Amanda always makes disparaging remarks about her missing husband, yet lets his picture remain. Tom always makes jokes about his dad, and how he "fell in love with long distances (1051)." This is his attempt to ease the pain of abandonment by turning it into something humorous. It is inevitable that the thing which Tom resents most in his father is exactly what Tom himself will carry out in the end, an escape. Through his father, Tom has seen that escape is possible, and though he is hesitant to leave his sister and even his mother behind, he is being driven to it. Tom escapes reality in many different ways. The first and most obvious is the fire escape that leads him away from his desolate home. Another would be the movies’ he attends; Amanda is always nagging him about going and being out late she thinks he spends too much time watching movies and that he should work harder and find a suitable companion for Laura. The more Amanda nags, the more Tom needs his movie escapes. They take him to another world for a while, where mothers and sisters and runaway fathers do not exist. As the strain gets worse, the movie watching becomes more frequent, as does Tom's drinking. It is getting harder and harder for Tom to avoid real life. The time for a real departure is fast approaching toward Tom and his plan to leave the isolated apartment. Amanda eventually pushes him over the edge, almost forcing him out, but not without laying overpowering guilt trips on him. Tom leaves, but his going away is not the escape that he craved for so long. The guilt of abandoning Laura is…
