Dr. Spencer’s idea of imagination seems to base its importance in unison with knowledge. She states that imagination is “essential yet most neglected”, though this is a controversial statement as the value of imagination is different all throughout the world, it is even different all throughout Pickering High School. The importance of imagination and art can be seen in our society through television and film, music, and visual arts. These things are not looked down upon - art, creativity and imagination are valued by everyone and are an important aspect of civilization. Knowledge is defined by the Merriam-Webster’s Learner’s Dictionary as “information, understanding, or skill that you get from experience or education”. Whereas, imagination is defined as “the ability to imagine things that are not real: the ability to form a picture in your mind of something that you have not seen or experienced”. The importance of these two things is debatable, the definitions of these two things are debatable and that’s what makes choosing a more valuable trait so difficult. It comes down to what will get one further in life, a person who goes far in life is normally defined as someone with a high salary. As previously stated, imagination without knowledge can be can produce incoherent and dangerous that could cause harm to others or the self. In terms of theatre or film, the successes of many directors can be seen and it is known that they cannot just rely on imagination, there must be a level of knowledge. Tim Burton, for example, is famous for directing very imaginative films. If these films were made without his knowledge and skill, then they most likely would not have been as commercially successful, or viewed as highly as they are. Knowledge without imagination, or vice versa can prove to lead to poor ideas and execution. Without each other, the world would not be as culturally evolved, or technologically advanced.
