Freedom In The White Mountains By John Christopher

The book, The White Mountains by John Christopher, describes freedom as a luxury. Freedom is extremely valuable, and many people have fought and even risked their own lives for it. In the United States, freedom is emphasised such as in their national anthem. There are reasons to why freedom is so important. They are to be creative, to disagree, and to be able to choose God. Creativity is what makes this world interesting and diverse. Many inventions were made by accident and by unusual combinations of things. Creativity provides us countless ideas and inspiration. Without it, this world would not only be boring, but undeveloped. For example, in the book, the setting was in a world taken over by Tripods. Once a person turns 14, he or she is forced to be capped which makes him or her start thinking like the Tripods. Because almost everyone was capped, the setting was basically full of the same minds, and no diversity. As a result, the setting was primitive and not advanced. An example of primitivity in the book is that Will became awestruck examining his father’s watch and took it without his permission to show it to Jack while today, watches are normal, and we sometimes take them for granted. We all do not have the same exact beliefs and views, neither do we agree on everything. Being forced to accept one’s ideas while having different opinions deep inside is unnatural. Having your own opinions is what makes you really yourself, and being able to disagree makes you able to express who you truly are. An example of not being able to disagree in the book is that everyone is obligated to love the Tripods and to accept their authority. They all had to accept the Tripods’ opinions. By being forced to do this, they were restricted from being themselves. Any people with different opinions, such as Will, Ozymandias, Henry, Beanpole, and others were persecuted for their
