The Role Of Freedom In Ayn Rand's Anthem
Freedom is probably the most important right that a person can have, but everyone in a time we forgot its value. In recent times we have appreciate acts of people or groups that wanted to take people’s freedom, by force or in their minds, a great example can be the Nazis when in 1939 starter a war, because they wanted to take away freedom from some people and exterminated. In the book Anthem we can see how the leaders of the society tried to take freedom away from people by not letting them choose by their own, taking away their thinking, destroying their minds by occulting the truth which is why you have freedom.
The leaders in anthem focus on taking away freedom from the humanity, no just by force but with something more powerful and it was to change the way they think, if you take decisions for a person that person is going to come more and more dependent of you. “so we wished to be sent to the Home of the Scholars. We wished it so much that our hands tremble under the blankets in the night, and we bit our arm to stop that other pain which we could not endure” pg. 24, yes we know why people were so oppress in the recent quote you can see how they can’t decide what they will for life, and how some all people choose for them what they would do for life. This decision takes away the something as important as the will so they never take decisions for their life’s this is one of the most influential was of taking away freedom. It is more dangerous when you let someone slave your mind, than when you let them slave your body. A slave mind doesn’t have purpose doesn’t care about things and just follow the what the society does or what

Ayn Rand perfectly captured the idea of a collectivist society in her book, Anthem, by creating a vivid image of the dangers of losing one’s sense of self. This concept can be applied to modern times, much like Equality does when proclaiming his anthem: “I understood that centuries of chains and lashes will not kill the spirit of man nor the sense of truth within him” (98). His statement personifies a man’s spirit, the perseverance of man, and implies that there are no restraints strong enough to thwart human nature.…

The concept of egoism is presented in Anthem, authored by Ayn Rand, using the principle that every man’s primary obligation should be toward his own well-being. Once Equality realizes what the sacred word to his society is, he begins to write about how the concept of altruism should not be placed at the root of a man’s heart, rather the concept of egoism. As Equality sits with his journal he writes, “For the word ‘We’ must never be spoken, save by one’s choice and as a second thought” (Rand 96). Equality believes that man shall not serve others, rather service themselves in an almost ‘selfish’ manner, with the exception of a man’s choice to work alongside other people. In summary, Equality believes that egoism should be the primary obligation…

Ayn Rand is known for her liberalist writings and very compelling works of fiction that border along being something of an attempted prophecy, specifically in the case of Anthem. While we may not have direct words from the author to prove this, the book gives off this aura as though it were a vision of what the world could become if communism as Rand knew it during her time continued on in the direction it had then been traveling. Perhaps Anthem was written, in contrast, to simply deliver a message of self-worth and independence to a new extreme. Her new arrival to America could have opened her eyes to the way that the world and government had the ability to be; it would have been a discovery that could have further turned her off the sort of…

Does everyone have “ego”? In Anthem the citizens of the city grew up not knowing of this word, and in turn its power. They were taught to be a whole, rounded up like tagged mules, doing assigned work blatantly. In the song “Drones” by Rise Against, the lyrics,“The drones all slave away, they're working overtime. They serve a faceless queen, they never question why. Disciples of a God, that neither lives nor breathes (I won't come back!). But we have bills to pay; yeah we have mouths to feed! (I won't come back!)” is the perfect description of the society in Anthem. It is people doing what they have been told to do without putting in their opinion or even thinking of what they want. Although not everyone is indifferent, the beings Equality and Liberty have a lively spirit inside them which is called “ego.” A Latin word which translated to English means “I.” Ego is the enigma which drives one’s actions and thoughts, and separates the person from everyone else.…

Ego. A word shamed upon in western society, because of negative implications. Men who have become wealthy through their hard works and sacrifices are depicted as “self-centered”. Since, society is angry toward people with huge amounts of wealth. Although egoism is portrayed as a bad thing, it should be a reward and gift. In our world today and language, the word “I” is significant, because it presents individualism. Everyone has knowledge that no one is the same, everyone has unique characteristics. However, to live in a collectivist society, individuality is impossible, as everyone is oppressed under a leader or government. Sadly, a person cannot challenge authority or meet goals, because of the limit to one’s thoughts. Moreover, a collectivist…

The power and knowledge of individualism is lost in the novel Anthem and Ayn Rand does a good job showing us the downfalls and troubles the future might hold. The society that Equality 7-2521 lives in is harsh and believes only in collectivism instead of individualism. The main collective government figures are known as Council of Scholars and Council of Vocations who make the rules and strictly force each brother in the society to follow each rule. They are forced to be alike in every way and live for each other instead of themselves. “We strive to be like all our brother men, for all men must be alike” (Rand 19). This is something that is not taken lightly and anyone that goes against this will have to go to the Palace of Corrective Detention…

“It is a sin to write this.” Equality once thought that when you write anything you become a sinner. As far as how he thinks now about everything, his perspective has changed dramatically. The Great Rebirth made it so everyone is supposed to believe in the same thing and act or look the same way, but Equality decided that he was better than that and decided to go against the status quo everyone else was under. Equality 7-2521's development as a character throughout Anthem can be seen as a progressive move towards the distinctive way of thinking he discovers and presents in the chapters of Anthem.…
