alternatives we see as negatives, we feel so little freedom that we twist and turn searching for another choice with some positive characteristics” (Jellison and Harvey 49). Freedom allows for opportunity, happiness, security, and to have an opinion. Freedom has been limited, due to people who abuse the rights given. America is doing the best to provide an equal opportunity for all. There is always decisions: though they may not feel positive, they are provided.
A handful of americans are naive to the amenities given to them. It seems as those who grew up less fortunate are the most appreciative. Mike Christian, a young man that grew up without a pair of shoes till he was thirteen, enlisted in U.S. Navy to show his appreciation for his country. Later on he was captured and was a prisoner of war. Within the prison he would find materials to stitch an american flag so him along with the other prisoners could pledge their allegiance to the american flag (McCain 6-7). John McCain a cellmate of Christians writes, “ He was making that flag because he knew how important it was for us to be able to pledge our allegiance to our flag and country” (7) Although Mike was a prisoner he was aware of the great things America had provided. He understood that America produced many opportunities and gave freedom to all who are willing to work hard to succeed. His stay in the Vietnam was an eye opening experience as to how safe and secure America is. Reinstating that America provides a safe access to the American dream. Citizens no longer view America as a haven for freedom, but rather a failed promise.
The new found connotation of America is negative. People need to open their eyes to realize that the American Dream is right underneath them. In this case Langston Hughes writes: Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain.
Seeking a home where he himself is free. (1-5)
The land where people spend their lifetime trying to become a U.S. citizen, let it again be recognized as America the great. When people envision america, it is the land of freedom, where speaking your opinion will not lead to execution. Neil Diamond wrote the influential song that welcomed people to america:
Home
To a new and a shiny place
Make our bed and we'll say our grace
Freedom's light burning warm
Freedom's light burning warm
(18-22)
America is beacon for ones looking for freedom, while citizens of america believe it is all lost. The definition had been blurred overtime. The american dream is indeed being safe and free, which America provides for every citizen. The founding fathers worked to give the American dream to all citizens. America presents their people with the american dream, as having the freedom to achieve happiness and pursue intentions, to feel happy and secure within America. The american dream is here, take the challenge to understand that there is an opportunity for every U.S. citizen to achieve greatness.
