1. Social Imagination theory- The sociological imagination is the concept of being able to “think ourselves away” from the familiar routines of our daily lives in order to look at them anew. Mills defined sociological imagination as “the vivid awareness of the relationship between experience and the wider society.” It is the ability to see things socially and how they interact and influence each other. To have a sociological imagination, a person must be able to pull away from the situation and think from an alternative point of view.
An example of Social Imagination is a person who is having a hard time getting a job due to some circumstances, so that person decided to just do illegal things such as do drugs and work on illegal places that gives him easy money. This can be a Social Imagination issue when there are many people who experience this kind of problem it influences the behavior and actions of people living in that society.
2. Symbolic Interaction theory- The symbolic interaction perspective, also called symbolic interactionism, is a major framework of sociological theory. Symbolic interaction theory analyzes society by addressing the subjective meanings that people impose on objects, events, and behaviors. Subjective meanings are given primacy because it is believe that people behave based on what they believe and not just on what is objectively true. Thus, society is thought to be socially constructed through human interpretation. People interpret one another’s behavior and it is these interpretations that form the social bond. These interpretations are called the “definition of the situation.”
An example of Symbolic Interaction Theory is associated when students tend to cheat on their exams it is objectively wrong to cheat on exams because it is not good and students know that cheating won’t make them learn anything, but subjectively the students still cheat on their exams because it is believed that it would make their grades higher and it would
