Identity theft is a major crime committed by illegal immigrants in America. It is believed that 75% of working illegal immigrants use counterfeit social security cards in pursuance of employment (Mortensen, 2009). Ninety-eight percent of these people use their real names with fake numbers. There has been an estimate of 1 million identity theft crime victims being under the age of 13 (Mortensen, 2009). This leads to severe problems in their later lives, and leaves a negative impact on their current years. They also set a negative outlook for other illegal immigrants as a community, showing that their actions not only effect themselves but others in the process.
