Imperialism Dbq Analysis

Throughout history, we have seen nations form under the common idea for unity and modernization of our country. As time continues, we see strong European countries imperialize other nations for wealth and foreign goods it can control. While some of the methods for gathering these materials were inhumane, unified colonies rose from their backbone of imperialism to become powerful countries such as Venezuela, India, and Canada. That is why a person should believe that imperialism was positive for human kind in the 1800s and early 1900s.
From the colonizer's point of view, imperialism was very positive. “Powerful European powers reap the many benefits of colonizing in other parts of the world. Not only do they reap a profit at overseas, but bankers
at home benefit from loans made to countries developing the new land.” (Doc. 1) Colonizers could advance by exploiting products for the world to enjoy. “Progressive nations would bring the colonists modern transportation services and education in exchange for the raw materials and goods of the colony.” (Doc. 2) The mother European country relies on their colony to remain a top economic power. “Colonial powers focus on providing for their colony and making conditions right for industrialization.” (Doc. 5) The European colonizers very well believed that they were benefitting humanity by spreading their culture to other parts of the world they colonize. “The British believed they were the finest race in the world. The more land they colonized, the better it benefitted people. Many European countries strongly believed that it was their duty to spread their culture and ideas.” (Cecil Rhodes)
While the colonizers saw nearly endless benefits of colonizing over-seas, colonists also were provided with many pros during colonization.
While many of the things brought into place by the European powers harmed the colonists, the benefits outweighed the costs of colonization. This was seen in India during the British rule. “The British brought advanced western education to India. Romesh Dutt believed this brought peace and order to the ancient and civilized India.” (Doc. 7) Imperialism brought modern transportation to colonies. “The rush to colonize nations brought new modes of transportation such as trains, canals, new roads.” (Doc. 3) Imperialism brought a new sense of unity to the colonies. “Many colonists who opposed Imperialism brought together a strong national unity which would not have happened without imperialism.” (Doc. 12) There are many countries today that would still be a majority indigenous and separated today if it weren’t for imperialism.
Imperialism was beneficial to our humanity. Today, we see strong countries that were once imperialized topping our GDP rankings. Imperialism should not be permanent. After witnessing many countries in Latin America and Africa break away from their European colonizers, I believe that imperialism should secede when a strong national government can be established. Imperialism has awakened many foreign lands and it has benefited them doing to in so many ways. While parts of imperialism were unspeakable, it has built our human race and has benefitted
it.
