Imperialism In Avatar
Which film deals with colonization? In fact, this is one of the highest grossing movies of all time. James Cameron’s 2009 film Avatar serves as a great example, with many instances of events representing the notion of colonization.
Avatar takes place in the year 2154 on an alien planet called Pandora. Humans on Earth have depleted their natural resources severely, which forces a private company called the Resources Development Administration to mine for minerals in Pandora. The inhabitants of Pandora are the indigenous humanoids called the Na’Vi who are just going about their business and living in peace. However, the RDA is comprised mostly of military personnel, sent to invade hostile territory for resources. Does this sound familiar? Native Americans vs. settlers and Inca vs. Spanish are both parallels that come to mind. When this situation occurs and both sides meet, things usually do not turn out well between them, thus inevitably leading to violent conflict.

The scientists use hybrids called avatars that look like the Na’Vi in order to explore the wildlife of Pandora. Sully operates his own avatar, a disguise that allows him to venture out into the poisonous atmosphere of Pandora. However, an unforeseen event occurs, leaving Sully stranded in the heart of the jungle where he encounters a female Na’Vi named Neytiri who takes him into her tribe (Waiting for the Barbarians?). Eventually, he is tasked with gathering information on the Na’Vi by the RDA. This means that Sully is living two different lives from two perspectives: one from the humans, and the other from the

For this assignment, the movie I decided to watch was called ‘Avatar’. This movie is about humans, or “sky people”, travelling to the planet Pandora to conduct studies over the natives that live on the planet, and to gain resources that the planet provides. The natives on Pandora are called the Na’vi, and they are blue creatures who are much different than humans. One of the humans that travelled to Pandora to study the Na’vi is named Jake Sully. Jake is a paralyzed ex-marine who decided to travel to the planet after his twin brother passed away. He came to be in the program where he takes the body of an avatar, so that he can learn more about the people on the planet. The air on Pandora is poisonous to the sky people, so they have to use the…

A superficial understanding of the Revolutionary War may lead to believe that it was struggle in which the purpose of the colonists was to rid themselves of the cruelty and tyranny associated with the British colonial regime. This is simply not true, or at the very least, it is not the whole truth. For the most part, the inhabitants of the colonies took pride in calling themselves Englishmen, and under the so-called tyrannical regime, enjoyed rights and privileges to a degree that would be considered exceptional in other parts of the 18th century world.…

On Pandora unobtanium is the key resource, and it is the economic incentive of the humans. They have been trying to mine without disturbing the natives, but they are becoming impatient. Using their high-tech equipment, the humans attacked the natives until they could get the amount of unobtanium they wanted. The humans used ex-marines to fight against the natives of Pandora. Since they did not give up their home tree, the humans burnt it to the round, so they could mine the unobtanium. The home tree was the center of their culture and their home, so once the humans destroyed it they had nothing. Suppose a stranger your home and demand that from now on you go by their rules and do as they say, most people would consider this absurd and do something about it. This is pretty much the situation that the United States put the citizens of the Philippines in the year of 1898. Imperialistic actions by the United States against the Philippines caused turmoil within the United States because the morals of the country were in question regarding the actions taking place and the beliefs stated in the Declaration of Independence. Anti-Imperialist League did not agree with the United States taking control over Philippine citizens and disregarding the fact that these citizens deserved respect. The Benevolent Assimilation Proclamation established by President McKinley was arguably unjust and impractical. Securing two naval bases to set up a means to develop commerce seems acceptable until it is put up against denying the Filipinos their sovereignty.…

The most prevalent theme in the film is globalization. This connection between AVATAR and anthropology can be found from the very beginning. The humans in the movie leave earth and travel to Pandora to mine the planet just as the pilgrims and other settlers left Europe to go to the Americas in search of new homes and other matter. Humans bring to Pandora their traditions and values and to them the natives are different and demure. In our somewhat similar history; globalization led European ideals, and later US ideals, to be imposed on the native cultures with little regard for the local people and their customs. You see this in Avatar with the humans trying to force their will on the Na'vi and how they don't care about the existence of a real Mother Nature, the power of their magical forest, and how what they are doing is going to destroy the Na’vi…

The United States annexes Hawaii in 1900 should be categorized as imperialism. Once Americans settled in Hawaii they began growing sugar and selling it to the U.S. Americans wanted to take over their economy and government.
